Sortland (town)
or is a town and the administrative centre of Sortland Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The town is located on the east coast of the island of Langøya, along the Sortlandsundet strait. In 1997, the municipality decided to declare " town status" for the urban area of Sortland. Sortland is the largest town and commercial centre in the whole Vesterålen region and is often referred to as "the blue town by the strait" () since many of the buildings are painted blue. The town has a population (2023) of 5,609 and a population density of . The Norwegian National Road 85 highway begins at Sortland and crosses the Sortland Bridge to connect the town to the nearby European route E10 highway on the neighboring island of Hinnøya. The town has a regional high school, a cultural centre, library, cinema, Sortland Museum, and Sortland Church. The town is also a regular stop of the Hurtigruten boats. Sortland Church
Sortland Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Sortland Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is located in the town of Sortland. It is one of the three churches for the Sortland parish which is part of the Vesterålen prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Sør-Hålogaland. The white, wooden, neo-Gothic church was built in a cruciform style in 1901 using plans drawn up by the architects Carl Julius Bergstrøm and Karl Norum. The church seats about 696 people. History The earliest existing historical records of this church date back to 1381, but the church was not new at that time. There have been several churches in Sortland over the centuries. The first churches in Sortland were located about southeast of the present-day church, closer to the fjord. The Sortland Bridge () is a cantilever road bridge that crosses the Sortlandssundet strait between the village of Strand, Nordland, Strand on Hinnøya island and the Sortland (town), town of Sortland on Langøya island. Bjørn Sortland (born 1 May 1968) is a Norwegian writer for children and young adults. Biography Sortland made his literary debut in 1992 with ''Det er ikkje natta'', a book for young adults. His next book, ''Raudt, blått og litt gult'' (1993), a picture book jointly with illustrator Lars Elling, earned them the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis in 1996 and the Melsom Prize in 1994. Among his other books are ''Love light'' from 1996, and ''Alle har eit sultent hjerte'', which earned him the Critics Prize for the year's best children's or youth's literature in 2008. Jon Sortland (born September 12, 1973) is an American musician, record producer and video director, currently playing the drums for indie rock band The Shins. Sortland has also played drums, bass, keyboards and backing vocals in the band Broken Bells. Sortland also writes and performs in his own bands, EV Kain and Cigar. Sortland is endorsed by Paiste and C&C Drums. History In the late 1980s, Sortland started The Circus Tents, a northern California skate punk band with Matt Wedgley (The Force, Dirty Filthy Mugs, Viva Hate), Scot Pickering, Jeff Jones and Chad Cox. Sortland Idrettslag is a Norwegian association football club from Sortland, Vesterålen. It was formerly a multi-sports club. History The club was founded on 3 March 1901 as ''SK Fremskridt'', practising Nordic skiing. Later, athletics and gymnastics were added and the club name changed to ''Sortland TIL'', later ''IL Fram'' and in 1929 ''Sortland IL''. In 1936, Sortland IL absorbed a small football club ''Varg'', meaning that football and swimming were introduced in Sortland IL. After World War II, the club also had sections for speed skating, alpine skiing, orienteering, volleyball and handball.
