Solarization (photography)
In photography, solarization is the effect of ''tone reversal'' observed in cases of extreme Exposure (photography), overexposure of the photographic film in the camera. Most likely, the effect was first observed in scenery photographs including the sun. The sun, instead of being the whitest spot in the image, turned black or grey. For instance, Minor White's photograph of a winter scene, ''The Black Sun 1955'', was a result of the shutter of his camera freezing in the open position, producing severe overexposure. Ansel Adams had also earlier created a solarized sun image, titled ''Black Sun, Owens Valley, California, 1939'', by overexposure. Sabattier Effect
The Sabatier effect, also known as pseudo-solarization (or pseudo-solarisation) and erroneously referred to as the Sabattier effect, is a phenomenon in photography in which the image recorded on a negative or on a photographic print is wholly or partially reversed in tone. Dark areas appear light or light areas appear dark. Solarization and pseudo-solarization are quite distinct effects. Vero Charles Driffield (7 May 1848 – 14 November 1915) was an English chemical substance, chemical engineer who also became involved in photographic research. Driffield was educated at Liverpool Collegiate Institution, Liverpool Collegiate and Sandbach School, Sandbach Grammar School. He also attended a private school in Southport where he came into contact with a Swiss people, Swiss master called Dr Knecht. Leaving school he became an apprentice to a photographer in Southport but then decided to study engineering. In 1871 he became an engineer at the Holbrook Gaskell, Gaskell–Henry Deacon (industrialist), Deacon Works in Widnes, Lancashire where the chief chemist was the Swiss Ferdinand Hurter. Photographic emulsion is a light-sensitive colloid used in film-based photography. Most commonly, in silver-gelatin photography, it consists of silver halide crystals dispersed in gelatin.
