Sokoľany
Sokoľany is a village and municipality in Košice-okolie District in the Košice Region of eastern Slovakia. Between 1961 and 1990, it was connected with its neighbouring village, Bočiar, forming the village of Hutníky. History Name The name likely comes from the word "sokol" (falcon), which is supported by documents as early as 1251 (villa Zocol). The village became Hungarianized and the name changed (e.g. Sokol, Zakul, Szakaly, Abaújszakaly). Geography The village lies in the south of the Košice basin on the Sokolianský potok. The cleared land is on the terrace plateau of the Hornád River, the western part on the alluvial cone of the Ida stream, deposited on Tertiary sediments. The municipality covers 385,82 hectares, of which 32,61 hectares are built-up. The built-up area is at an altitude of up to 300 m above sea level (specifically between 204 and 213 m above sea level) with a maximum slope of up to 8,5%. Košice-okolie District
Košice–okolie District (''okres Košice–okolie''; , lit. 'Košice-Surroundings') is a district in the Košice Region of eastern Slovakia. It surrounds the city of Košice, which serves as the district seat although it does not belong to the district. History The Košice–okolie district was a part of Great Moravia until the 10th century. After the district fell apart, the area was incorporated into Abaúj and Torna, which were counties of the Kingdom of Hungary. The region was a part of Abaúj-Torna County from 1882 until the end of World War I. It then became part of the newly formed Czechoslovakia. Excluding a small section in the north, the district formed a part of Abovsko-turnianská župa of the county of Šariš from 1918 to 1923.
