''Bagyi'' Aung Soe ( ; 1924–1990) was a Burmese painter renowned for his modernistic, semi-abstract art, which caused such a shock in Burma when it appeared that many called it "psychopathic art". The name "Bagyi" is his phonetic spelling of the word "pangyi", meaning "painting", which he first added to his name in 1955. Santiniketan and Early Life in Burma The Indian government offered him a scholarship in 1951 to study art at Santiniketan, founded by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, but he chose to return to Burma after only a year. He traveled throughout Burma, studying its handicrafts, classical art and architecture, especially that of Bagan. Soe Hok Gie (17 December 1942 – 16 December 1969) was a Chinese Indonesian activist who opposed the successive dictatorships of Presidents Sukarno and Suharto. Overview Soe was an ethnic Chinese Roman Catholic, the fourth of five children in his family. His father Soe Lie Piet was a literary writer and magazine editor, and his elder brother Arief Budiman was a sociologist and lecturer at Satya Wacana Christian University and a vocal critical voice in Indonesian politics. After spending his final years of senior high school at Kanisius, Soe attended the University of Indonesia (UI) from 1962 until 1969; upon finishing university he became a lecturer at his alma mater until his sudden death shortly before he was to turn 27. Soe Myat Min
U Soe Myat Min (, ; born 19 May 1982) is a former Burmese footballer. He played for the Myanmar national team and spent the majority of his club career at Kanbawza. Making his debut for the national team since 1998, he was made captain for the 2002 Tiger Cup. Soe Myat Min also played a key role for Myanmar at the Tiger Cup, helping them qualify for the semi-finals. He himself finished the tournament as joint second top scorer of the tournament with six goals and was included in the tournament's best XI. He also helped Myanmar win their fourth Merdeka Cup Championship in 2006 and was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Thakin Soe (, ; 1906 – 6 May 1989) was a founding member of the Communist Party of Burma and a leader of the Anti-Fascist Organisation. He is regarded as one of Burma's most prominent communist leaders. Early life Soe was an ethnic Mon people, Mon and was born in Mawlamyine, Moulmein (present-day Mawlamyine). He worked for the Burmah Oil Company. Movement Before independence Soe joined the nationalist ''Dobama Asiayone'' ("Our Burma" Association) in 1930s. Soe together with Thakin H. N.
