Socorro Girón
Socorro Girón (9 March 1919 – 2005) was a Puerto Rican historian, writer, and scholar. She is best known for her legendary book ''"Ponce, el teatro La Perla y La Campana de la Almudaina: Historia de Ponce desde sus comienzos hasta la Segunda Decada del Siglo XX."'' (Ponce, el teatro La Perla and La Campana de la Almudaina: History of Ponce from its beginnings to the second decade of the 20th century.) Early years and schooling Girón was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1919. She received her Ph.D. in Hispanic Studies from the University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras in 1984. Career Professor and scholar In 1965, after having received her M.A. degree (1962), Girón published her first major work titled "Gregorio Marañon, escritor" (Gregorio Marañon, writer). La Perla Del Sur
''La Perla del Sur'' is a weekly online Spanish-language newspaper based in Ponce, Puerto Rico, catering to a regional audience. It started as a printed paper distributed in nine towns in southern Puerto Rico and had a circulation of 75,000. It also had an Internet portal where the entire printed version of the paper could be accessed. It was founded in 1983. After a three-month hiatus from June to September 2022, the paper re-opened as an online-only paper on 15 September 2022 under new ownership. History The newspaper was founded in Ponce in 1983 by Juan Nogueras de la Cruz with a crew of six employees. It was first published every other week, had 32 pages and a circulation of 40,000 copies. At first it circulated only in Ponce and Juana Diaz, but a year after its foundation it started circulating also in the towns of Santa Isabel, Coamo, Guayanilla, Peñuelas and Yauco. Tricentennial Park (Ponce, Puerto Rico)
Parque del Tricentenario is a passive urban park in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. The park was built to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the city. It was inaugurated during the mayoral administration of mayor Rafael Cordero Santiago. Location The park is a passive urban family park. It is located in Barrio Tercero at the entrance to the Ponce Historic Zone on Miguel Pou Boulevard, at the southern terminus of PR-1. Features The park is a three-plaza park. All three plazas have gardens and marble benches. Setting the stage for the park is ''El Puente de los Leones'' (The Bridge of the Lions). It spans Rio Portugues and is the gateway to, not just Parque del Tricentenario, but to the Ponce historical district as well. The University of Puerto Rico at Ponce (UPRP or UPR-Ponce) is a public college in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It is the only campus of the University of Puerto Rico on the southern region of the island. History The school opened on 23 August 1970 as Colegio Regional de Ponce de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (often shortened to Colegio Regional de Ponce). In 1982, the school starts offering four-year degrees and its name is changed Colegio Universitario Tecnológico de Ponce (CUTPO) to reflect this.
