The Society of American Foresters (SAF) is a professional organization representing the forestry industry in the United States. Its mission statement declares that it seeks to "advance the science, education, and practice of forestry; to enhance the competency of its members; to establish professional excellence; and, to use the knowledge, skills and conservation ethic of the profession to ensure the continued health and use of forest ecosystems and the present and future availability of forest resources to benefit society". Austin Cary
Austin Cary (July 31, 1865 – April 28, 1936) was an American forester, known as the "father of southern forestry". Austin Cary Forest, on Great Island, Maine, is named for him. Early life and education Cary was born in 1865 in East Machias, Maine, to Charles Cary and Mary Eliza. He was one of their two sons, the other being George. He was a descendent of John Cary, who arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony from Bristol, England, in 1630. Caleb Cary, Austin's grandfather, moved north in the early 19th century, settling in East Machias. He was educated at Washington Academy in East Machias. He graduated with honors from Bowdoin College in 1887. After working as an instructor in Biology and Geology at Bowdoin for a year, he moved to Johns Hopkins University, where he studied biology for eighteen months. Bernhard Eduard Fernow
Bernhard Eduard Fernow ( ; January 7, 1851 – February 6, 1923) was the third chief of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Division of Forestry of the United States from 1886 to 1898, preceding Gifford Pinchot in that position, and laying much of the groundwork for the establishment of the United States Forest Service in 1905. Fernow's philosophy toward forest management may be traced to Heinrich Cotta's preface to ''Anweisung zum Waldbau'' (Instruction in Silviculture) or Linnaeus' ideas on the "economy of nature." Fernow has been called the "father of professional forestry in the United States." Raphael Zon (December 1, 1874 – October 27, 1956) was a prominent United States Forest Service, U.S. Forest Service researcher. Early life Raphael Zon was born in Ulyanovsk, Simbirsk in the Russian Empire in 1874, to parents Gabriel Zon and Eugenia Berliner. A schoolmate of Lenin's, he fled Russia in 1896 while on bail following arrest for organizing a trade union. Zon and companion Anna Puziriskaya, whom he would later marry, fled to Belgium where he studied in Liège. He spent nine months in London before emigrating to the United States in 1898. John R. (born John Richbourg, August 20, 1910 – February 15, 1986) was an American radio disc jockey who attained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for playing rhythm and blues music on Nashville radio station WLAC. He was also a notable record producer and artist manager. Richbourg was arguably the most popular and charismatic of the four announcers at WLAC who showcased popular African-American music in nightly programs from the late 1940s to the early 1970s.
