Snow Camp, North Carolina
Snow Camp is an unincorporated community in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. History The origin of the name of the community is disputed, but the most commonly accepted story as to how the name came about was that before the American Revolution a group of hunters from Pennsylvania camped there during a snowfall. The lesser accepted story is that General Cornwallis camped there during a snowfall around the time of the Battle of Guilford Court House. Though quite small, Snow Camp is historically significant. Herman Husband, a leader in the Regulator Movement lived here. The Regulator Movement culminated in the Battle of Alamance prior to the Revolutionary War. During the Revolutionary War, battles were fought nearby at Lindley's Mill, Clapp's Mill, and at Pyle’s Defeat. The Battle of Lindley's Mill (also known as the Battle of Cane Creek) took place in Orange County, North Carolina (now in Alamance County, North Carolina, Alamance County), on September 13, 1781, during the American Revolutionary War. Cane Creek Friends Meeting
The Cane Creek Friends Meeting, founded in 1751, is considered the first established Quaker community in the Piedmont (United States), Piedmont region of North Carolina. The site was occupied by British troops during the American Revolutionary War. History Simon Dixon (Quaker), Simon Dixon, a Quaker who migrated from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, came to the Cane Creek area and what is now known as Snow Camp, North Carolina during the late 1740s. By 1751, as many as thirty other Quaker families had migrated to Snow Camp. During 1751, Quaker Minister Abigail Pike and Rachel Wright traveled to Perquimans County, North Carolina to attend the Quarterly Meeting at Little River, in hopes of gaining permission to establish a new monthly meeting in Cane Creek. Snow Camp Mutual Telephone Exchange Building is a historic telephone exchange building located at Snow Camp, Alamance County, North Carolina. It was built in 1915, and is a small, square, vernacular, two-story frame structure. It has a pyramidal roof and rests on a stone foundation. One-story gabled wings were added in 1927 when the building was converted into a dwelling. A one-story kitchen addition was built in 1986. The building housed the switchboard, operator, and company telephone equipment. Friends Spring Meeting House
Spring Friends Meeting House is a historic Quaker meeting house located at Snow Camp, Alamance County, North Carolina. The fourth and current meeting house was built in 1907, and is a small rectangular frame one-story gable-front building. It features Gothic Revival style lancet windows and a short, plain rectangular cupola with pyramidal roof. Spring Friends Meeting is an active congregation of Quakers from the Alamance, Chatham, Orange, Guilford and Randolph County area of North Carolina. Members of the Religious Society of Friends first started "meeting at the spring" around 1761, with the congregation formally recognized by North Carolina Yearly Meeting in 1773. The adjacent contributing cemetery dates from the founding of the meeting, about 1761. Pyle's Massacre
Pyle's Massacre (also known as Pyle's defeat, Pyle's hacking match or Battle of Haw River) was fought during the American Revolutionary War in present-day Alamance County, North Carolina on February 24, 1781. The battle was between Patriot troops attached to the Continental Army under Colonel Henry Lee III and Loyalist North Carolina militiamen commanded by John Pyle. Due to the unique uniform of his forces, the Loyalists mistakenly thought Lee's men were the British Legion, who were en route to reinforce Pyle. When Lee's men opened fire, they took Pyle's force totally by surprise. This resulted in an extremely lopsided victory for Lee, and Pyle's command was scattered and routed.
