Suriname is divided into 10 districts ( nl, districten). Overview History The country was first divided up into subdivisions by the Dutch on October 8, 1834, when a Royal Decree declared that there were to be 8 divisions and 2 districts: *Upper Suriname and Torarica *Para *Upper Commewijne *Upper Cottica and Perica *Lower Commewijne *Lower Cottica *Matapica *Saramacca *Coronie (district) *Nickerie (district) The divisions were areas near the capital city, Paramaribo, and the districts were areas further away from the city. Saramacca District
Saramacca is a district of Suriname, in the north. Saramacca's capital city is Groningen, with other towns and cities including Batavia, Kampong Baroe, Uitkijk, Maho and Boskamp. Saramacca has a population of 17,480 and an area of 3,636 km2. Saramaka is also the name of a group of Maroons who established communities along the Saramacca River having fled slavery. History The district was founded in 1983, but the history dates back to 1790 when the first plantation was opened. Until 1936, Saramacca could only be access by boat, but with the construction of a road to Paramaribo, which is now part of the East-West Link, Saramacca was removed for its isolation. In 1982, oil was discovered in Sarammacca which boosted its economy. On 13 December 2014, Staatsolie opened an oil refinery. Resorts Of Suriname
The ten districts of Suriname are divided into 63 resorts ( Dutch: ''ressorten''). Within the capital city of Paramaribo, a resort entails a neighbourhood; in other cases it is more akin to a municipality, consisting of a central place with a few settlements around it. The resorts in the Sipaliwini District are especially large, since the interior of Suriname is sparsely inhabited. The average resort is about and has almost 8,000 inhabitants. According to article 161 of the Constitution of Suriname, the highest political body of the resort is the Resort councils of Wanica . Wayamboweg
Wayamboweg is a resort in Suriname, located in the Saramacca District. Its population at the 2012 census was 1,560. The largest ethnic group is East Indian. The resort is mainly agricultural. A rice project has started in late 2017. In the early 21st century, a high school has been opened. The resort is located near the ocean, and tourism facilities are being developed in the resort. Groningen, Suriname
Groningen is the capital town of the Saramacca District, Suriname. Groningen only began to grow after 1960. Around that time the East-West Link, a road linking Albina via Paramaribo to Nieuw Nickerie was built. This let Groningen become accessible by road. The town features: an office of the district commissioner; a post office; an office for the police commander, an office of the State health foundation(SZF) and the J. Eliazer football stadium, named after the founder of the Football Federation of Saramacca and president. There is also a Moravian Church and a Roman Catholic church. In 1910, a nursing home for yaws sufferers was established. It was closed after it was discovered that the disease could be cured within days by applying Salvarsan. Staatsolie, officially Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname (), is a Surinamese oil and gold company which was established to execute the oil policy which includes exploration, drilling and processing oil. In 2014 Staatsolie expanded its business to gold. Staatsolie is wholly state-owned. History In 1965 oil was discovered in Calcutta, Saramacca. On 13 December 1980, Staatsolie was established to manage Suriname's own oil industry instead of selling the oil fields to multi-nationals cooperations. On 25 November 1982, first drilling started in Tambaredjo. In 1988 the first crude oil was exported to Trinidad and Tobago. In February 1995 Staatsolie built a refinery. In 2014 it was announced that Staatsolie would participate for 25% in a recently discovered gold field in the Merian area. In 2019 the production was 524,000 ounces of gold, resulting in an annual revenue of US$101 million.
