Smithdom is a tribute band who play the music of The Smiths from 1983 to 1987. The band is from Manchester, England. Background Smithdom was formed in February 2009, but only found a singer in June of that year after an appeal in the '' Manchester Evening News'' and '' City Life''. Their first gig was in October 2009 in Bolton and they were well received. They have attracted a lot of interest since and have been interviewed along with other Smiths tribute bands for the Los Angeles-based ''Covers'' magazine. The band took their name from one of the proposed names that Morrissey had suggested before deciding on The Smiths. The musicians have played in bands in the North West of England for several years and have played with and supported Badly Drawn Boy and John Cooper Clarke. The Smiths
The Smiths were an English Rock music, rock band formed in Manchester in 1982, composed of Morrissey (vocals), Johnny Marr (guitar), Andy Rourke (bass) and Mike Joyce (musician), Mike Joyce (drums). Badly Drawn Boy
Damon Michael Gough (born 2 October 1969), known by the stage name Badly Drawn Boy, is an English indie singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Gough chose his stage name from a character in the show '' The Magic Ball'', which he saw on TV at a party in Trafford, Greater Manchester, in 1995. Before he thought of using this name he made some business cards, each one unique, with a printed picture of a drawing by his nephew and a small collage by Gough. At the Generation X bar in Manchester, Gough met Andy Votel, who was DJing that night. John Cooper Clarke
John Cooper Clarke (born 25 January 1949) is an English performance poet and comedian who styled himself as a "punk poet" in the late 1970s. In the 1970s and early 1980s, he released several albums and performed on stage with punk and post-punk bands. He continues to perform regularly. His recorded output has mainly relied on musical backing from the Invisible Girls, which featured Martin Hannett, Steve Hopkins, Pete Shelley, Bill Nelson and Paul Burgess. Early life Clarke was born in Salford, Lancashire, in 1949. He lived in the Higher Broughton area of the city and became interested in poetry after being inspired by his English teacher, John Malone. It was released in September 1988, a year after the band's breakup, through Rough Trade Records, and reached No. 2 in the British charts. In the United States, the album was released on Sire Records and made No. 77. Background ''Rank'' was released as a contractual obligation. It was recorded almost two years earlier on 23 October 1986 at National Ballroom in Kilburn, London, and is a fourteen-track distillation (of 20 songs) by singer Morrissey from the complete concert recording that had earlier been transmitted by BBC Radio 1. John Martin Marr (Birth name#Maiden and married names, né Maher; born 31 October 1963) is a musician, songwriter and singer.
