Smith's Flour Mill
Smith's Flour Mill is a heritage-listed former flour mill and now retail store at 91 Newcastle Road, East Maitland, New South Wales, East Maitland, City of Maitland, New South Wales, Australia. It was built from 1844 by John Smith. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History As early as 1830 emancipated convict John Smith, man of property, insisted on calling himself "Gentleman Smith". Despite the opinions of the Mitchells and other free settlers, Smith was determined to do well. He no doubt felt self-satlsfied when his carriage was used by Charles Augustus FitzRoy, Governor Fitzroy on a vice-regal visit to the Hunter Valley in 1847. It is possible that Smith named a road that traversed his Wallis Plains farm "Fitzroy Road" as a personal compliment to the Governor of New South Wales, Governor on this occasion. The New South Wales State Heritage Register, also known as NSW State Heritage Register, is a heritage list of places in the state of New South Wales, Australia, that are protected by New South Wales legislation, generally covered by the Heritage Act 1977 and its 2010 amendments. Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Charles Augustus FitzRoy, (10 June 179616 February 1858) was a British Army officer, politician and colonial administrator who held governorships in several British colonies during the 19th century. Family and peerage Charles was born in Derbyshire England, the eldest son of General Lord Charles FitzRoy and Frances Mundy.
