Smedjebacken Municipality
Smedjebacken Municipality () is a municipalities of Sweden, municipality in Dalarna County in central Sweden. Its seat is located in the town of Smedjebacken. The present municipality was formed in two steps during the last nationwide local government reform in Sweden. In 1967 the market town (''köping'') Smedjebacken was reunited with ''Norrbärke'' from which it had been detached in 1918. In 1974 ''Söderbärke'' was added. The municipality borders to eight other municipalities. The coat of arms depicts a sailing ship and cogwheels. These are intended to show the old and new industry sectors of the municipality. It was first granted 1947, but has undergone a few redesigns since. In Smedjebacken there is a skiingclub NSKalpin.com which has a live webcamera from the slope. Also close by is Lernbo where the biggest sportsfishing retailer in Europe has its headquarters. Dalarna County () is a county or '' län'' in central Sweden (Svealand). It borders on the counties of Uppsala, Jämtland, Gävleborg, Västmanland, Örebro and Värmland. Karl Edvard Laman
Karl Edvard Laman (born Karl Edvard Ersson) (1867–1944) was a Swedish missionary and ethnographer active in Kingdom of Kongo during the period of 1891 through 1919. Laman and his wife collected a large group of ethnographic materials and this collection of more than 2,000 pieces is the most comprehensive of that brought back by the Swedish missionaries of his time. Early years Karl was born in Smedjebacken, Sweden in 1867. His father, Gustaf Ersson worked at a mill, and his mother, Christina Ulrika Wallin, was a maid at the vicarage. While young, he worked as a gardener in Stockholm. Nils Gustaf Ekholm (9 October 1848 – 5 April 1923) was a Swedish meteorologist who led a Swedish geophysical expedition to Spitsbergen in 1882–1883. Biography Ekholm was born in Smedjebacken in Dalarna, son of a pharmacist. Having completed his '' mogenhetsexamen'' in 1868, he enrolled at the University of Uppsala in September 1869, and graduated with a Candidate of Philosophy degree in 1876, completing a Licentiate degree in 1887 and a Ph.D. in 1888. He was a student of Robert Rubenson and Hugo Hildebrand Hildebrandsson. Maria Keohane
Maria Keohane (born 13 May 1971) is a Swedish soprano who has performed at festivals in Europe and made many recordings, especially of sacred music. Life and career Keohane was born in Manchester to a Swedish mother and an Irish father. She and her mother moved to Smedjebacken in Sweden when she was five. She still resides there. She had many fiddlers in the family on her mother's side, and started playing the violin at the age of nine. She also sang in the local church children's choir. Keohane planned to become a veterinarian, and interned at Falu djursjukhus, where she was offered a job, but was encouraged to pursue a career in music. Hans Olaf Halvor Heyerdahl (8 July 1857 – 10 October 1913) was a Norwegian Realist painter. His work was characterized by naturalism and focused largely on portraits and landscape paintings. Biography Heyerdahl was born in Smedjebacken, Sweden. He was the son of and Hilda Margretha Haak (1834–1917). His father was a prominent engineer and architect. In 1859, the family moved to Drammen, where his father took up the joint posts of city engineer and fire chief. Mälaren
Mälaren ( , , or ), historically referred to as Lake Malar in English, is the third-largest freshwater lake in Sweden (after Vänern and Vättern). Its area is and its greatest depth is 64 m (210 ft). Mälaren spans from east to west.
