Slipmatt
Matthew Nelson (born 22 April 1967 in Loughton, Essex, England), better known as DJ Slipmatt, is a British electronic music producer and DJ. He was one half of breakbeat hardcore group SL2, who had a 1992 UK hit with " On a Ragga Tip". Biography In 1988, while working as an electrician and courier, Nelson obtained his first turntables and started playing hip-hop and house. He then founded a pirate radio station named "Raw FM" in London's East End, and in 1989 began his professional DJ career as DJ for the Raindance rave event. His first music production was in 1989 where Slipmatt collaborated with DJ Lime forming SL2. The single, "Do That Dance", was released in that same year. This was followed by the number 11 UK chart hit "DJs Take Control" / "Way in My Brain". The follow-up single, " On a Ragga Tip", reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart in April 1992. SL2 is an English breakbeat hardcore group from London, England. They also sound recording and reproduction, recorded, remixed or record producer, produced under the names Slipmatt & Lime and T.H.C. Background Starting out as a group of three, SL2 was originally a coming together of DJs Matt "Slipmatt" Nelson and John "Lime" Fernandez, and rap vocalist Jason "Jay-J" James. The SL2 name came from the founders' initials: Slipmatt (S) and Lime (L), and the fact that they were a duo, hence "SL2". On A Ragga Tip
"On a Ragga Tip" is a song by British breakbeat hardcore group SL2, released as a single in 1992. The song contains samples of Jah Screechy's "Walk and Skank" and Kid 'n Play's "Gittin' Funky (UK Remix)". The song was a success, peaking at 2 in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, No. 3 in Ireland and No. 42 in Belgium. It remains the group's biggest and best-known song. In 1997, a remix of the song was released and reached No. 31 in the UK. In 2015, the original SL2 version was used in a McDonald's television commercial in the UK, in 2019, it was used in a Virgin Media commercial and in 2025 it was used in a Doritos commercial. Raindance (rave)
Raindance are British rave event organisers. They were one of the best known rave names on the rave scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The start The first event was held at a circus tent on 16 September 1989 at Jenkins Lane, Beckton in east London. This was Britain's first legal all night rave. DJs such as Carl Cox, Dave Angel, LTJ Bukem, Mr C, DJ Rap, John Digweed, DJ Face, Kevin Saunderson, Kevin "Reece" Saunderson, Slipmatt, Fabio (DJ), Fabio and Grooverider started out at Raindance. Live acts such as Shades of Rhythm, N-Joi and The Prodigy have all played at Raindance. Helter Skelter (rave Music Promoter)
Helter Skelter was one of the longest running dance music promoters in the UK, which began organising megaraves in the early 1990s. Its largest-ever rave was "Energy 97 – The Carnival of Dance" in Northamptonshire which attracted 18,000 revellers. The electronic dance music featured at its events was characterised as "happy hardcore". By New Year's Eve 1999, its popularity had declined, as garage music clubs became more mainstream. It regularly held events at Sanctuary Music Arena in Milton Keynes until the venue closed in 2004. Darren James Mew (born 23 May 1975), better known as Darren Styles, is an English music producer, DJ, singer and songwriter from Clacton-On-Sea, Essex. Originally a member of the breakbeat hardcore group DJ Force & the Evolution, Styles found success during the 1990s as one half of Force & Styles. The duo were pioneers of happy hardcore and wrote several well-known songs such as "Heart of Gold (Force & Styles song), Heart of Gold", "Pretty Green Eyes" and "Paradise & Dreams". In the early 2000s, Styles began producing more trance music, trance-influenced records with Mark Breeze, Mark Brady as Styles & Breeze. The duo released two hit singles "You're Shining" (2002) and "Heartbeatz" (2003) which both reached the top 20 of the UK Singles Chart. Breakbeat hardcore (also referred to as hardcore rave, oldskool hardcore or simply hardcore) is a music genre that spawned from the UK rave scene during the early 1990s. It combines four-on-the-floor rhythms with breakbeats usually sampled from hip hop. In addition to the inclusion of breakbeats, the genre also features shuffled drum machine patterns, hoover, and other noises originating from new beat and Belgian techno, sounds from acid house and bleep techno, and often upbeat house piano riffs and vocals. Loughton () is a suburban town and civil parish in the Epping Forest District of Essex. Space (, , ) was a superclub on the island of Ibiza, Spain from 1986 to 2016, owned by STANCA. In 2022 the brand opened a bar near Cafe Mambo. They sometimes run popup events around the world, but don't have a fixed club at the time of writing in 2023. It was awarded "Best Global Club" at the International Dance Music Awards in 2005, 2006, 2012, 2013, and 2014. Space was located in Platja d'en Bossa on the outskirts of Ibiza Town, close to the Ibiza Airport, airport.
