Sleeping States
Sleeping States is a British musical solo project of British musician Markland Starkie (born 1981). Started in 2004 in London, Sleeping States falls predominantly in the songwriter genre. Sleeping States has also been associated with Lo-Fi, DIY and Queercore, having released a number of 7"s, cassette-only EPs and a CD-R album on several small DIY labels in Britain, including the Queercore label/collective Homocrime and Tome Records (now a record shop in Hackney). 2008 saw Sleeping States play Wireless Festival and tour with Noah and the Whale. Starkie played briefly in another band, Barton Carriages 2014-2016, resulting in a short album of recordings. After a period of low activity, Starkie revived Sleeping States in 2017 for a short UK tour to mark ten years since the release of There The Open Spaces. Bella Union
Bella Union is a British independent record label founded in 1997 by Simon Raymonde and Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins. It is now run solely by Raymonde. History After releasing records with 4AD for a large part of their career, Cocteau Twins decided to start up the Bella Union record label in 1997, through which they could release their own work as well as any collaborative efforts. The band had a difficult relationship with 4AD founder Ivo Watts-Russell and also regretted signing with Universal Music Group's Mercury Records. The band split up not long after, but instead of letting the newly formed label go under, Robin Guthrie, Simon Raymonde and their former manager Fiona Glyn-Jones decided to take charge of it. Queercore Musicians
Queercore (or homocore) is a cultural/social movement that began in the mid-1980s as an offshoot of the punk subculture and a music genre that comes from punk rock. It is distinguished by its discontent with society in general, and specifically society's disapproval of the LGBTQ community. Queercore expresses itself in a DIY style through magazines, music, writing and film. Noah And The Whale
Noah and the Whale were a British indie rock and folk band from Twickenham, formed in 2006 and dissolved in 2015. The band's last line-up consisted of Charlie Fink (Singing, vocals, guitar), Tom Hobden (violin/Keyboard instrument, keyboards), Matt "Urby Whale" Owens (bass guitar), Fred Abbott (guitar/Keyboard instrument, keys) and Michael Petulla (Drum kit, drums).
