Sleeping Bag Records
Sleeping Bag Records was a New York City-based independent record label founded by musician Arthur Russell (musician), Arthur Russell and entrepreneur Will Socolov. It was active between 1981 and 1992, and specialized in dance music and hip hop. Background and history The label was founded in 1981 initially to release singles produced by Arthur Russell under his various dance aliases. Their first release was the Dinosaur L album ''24→24 Music'' (1981). The label's roster would eventually include Mantronix, Just-Ice, Nice & Smooth, T La Rock, EPMD and Stezo; freestyle music, freestyle vocalists Nocera (singer), Nocera and Kariya ("Let Me Love You for Tonight"); and R&B singer-songwriter Joyce Sims. Arthur Russell (musician)
Charles Arthur Russell Jr. (May 21, 1951 – April 4, 1992) was an American cellist, composer, producer, singer, and musician from Iowa, whose work spanned a disparate range of styles. After studying contemporary composition and Indian classical music in California, Russell relocated to New York City in the mid-1970s, where he became involved in Lower Manhattan's avant-garde community and later the city's burgeoning disco scene. His eclectic music was often marked by adventurous production choices and his soft tenor vocals. Russell worked as musical director of the New York avant-garde venue The Kitchen in 1974 and 1975, but later embraced dance music, producing or co-producing several underground club hits under names such as Dinosaur L, Loose Joints, and Indian Ocean between 1978 and 1988. The Jerky Boys
The Jerky Boys are an American comedy act from Queens, New York City, New York (state), New York, whose routine consisted of Prank call, prank telephone calls and other related Sketch comedy, skits. The duo was founded in 1989 by childhood friends Johnny Brennan and Kamal Ahmed (comedian), Kamal Ahmed. After Ahmed left the act in 2000, the Jerky Boys continued on as a solo act featuring only Brennan, before going on a 19-year hiatus after the 2001 release of the franchise's penultimate album, ''The Jerky Tapes''. Brennan released a follow-up album of new material in November 2020. The phone calls were made by calling unsuspecting recipients, or in response to classified advertisements placed in local New York City, New York–based newspapers. A prank call (also known as a crank call, a hoax call, or a goof call) is a telephone call intended by the caller as a practical joke played on the person answering. Unfinished Business (EPMD Album)
''Unfinished Business'' is the second album by hip hop duo EPMD. Released July 25, 1989, the album built upon the success of the group's previous album '' Strictly Business'', which was released the previous year. The lead single, " So Wat Cha Sayin'," was the only charting single released from the album. It was the second album from the group to hit No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album was certified Gold by the RIAA on October 16, 1989. It was one of three albums that Priority/EMI Records acquired from Sleeping Bag Records when it ceased operations in 1991; the other two were EPMD's debut, '' Strictly Business'', and Nice & Smooth’s self-titled album.
