Skovshoved
Skovshoved is a former fishing village on the Øresund coast north of Copenhagen, Denmark. The area is part of Charlottenlund postal district and Gentofte Municipality. Local landmarks include Skovshoved Church, Skovshoved Hotel and the listed Arne Jacobsen-designed Skovshoved Petrol Station from 1938. History The first known reference to Skovshoved (''Scogshouet'') is from 1275. It was originally a small fishing village with just a few houses. An inn, Skovshoved Kro, opened in the village in 1660. In 1620 it obtained status of royal privileged inn, enabling it to brew its own beer. Skovshoved was known for its fish wives, ''Skovserkoner'', who would carry the day's catch in caskets on their back to the fish market at Gammel Strand in Copenhagen. The first harbor was built in 1869. In the middle of the 19th century, Skovshoved, like the other fishing villages along the Øresund coast, began to attract summer visitors from Copenhagen. Skovshoved Petrol Station
The Skovshoved Petrol Station () is a historic, still-operating filling station in Skovshoved at the northern outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark. First opened in 1936, it was designed by Arne Jacobsen and is an example of the functionalist style typical of the time. It is Class A listed and was thoroughly restored in 2002. The filling station was originally commissioned by Texaco but is now operated by Uno-X. While the pumps and the roof are still used as a petrol station, the main building now houses an ice cream parlor, with no relation to the petrol station business and its operations. Kurt Børge Nikolaj "Nikkelaj" Nielsen (2 September 1924 – 17 July 1986) was a Danish professional football (soccer) player and manager, who most prominently coached the Denmark national team from 1976 to 1979. Arne Emil Jacobsen, Honorary Fellowship of the American Institute of Architects, Hon. FAIA (; 11 February 1902 – 24 March 1971) was a Danish architect and furniture designer. He is remembered for his contribution to functionalism (architecture), architectural functionalism and for the worldwide success he enjoyed with simple well-designed chairs. Meyer Herman Bing
Meyer Herman Bing (4 June 1807 – 15 September 1883) was a Denmark, Danish businessman. He was a co-founder of Bing & Grøndahl. Early life and education Bing was born in Copenhagen, the son of bookseller Herman Jacob Bing (1776–1844) and Sara Meyer (1776–1848). Career Bing started working in his father's book and paper shop as a child. Its name was changed to H. J. Bing & Søn when he became a partner in 1833. He continued the firm in a partnership with his four years younger brother Jacob Herman Bing after his father's retirement in 1838. He opened a combined art and gallantry shop at the corner of Kronprinsensgade in 1848. It was recognized as the most elegant shop in Copenhagen and was even prior to its official opening visited by Christian VIII. Carl Brummer
Carl Harald Brummer (12 July 1864 – 14 February 1953) was a Danish architect who was influential in the design of homes at the beginning of the 20th century. Early life and education Brummer was born in Bogense as the son of Hans Frederik Brummer and Ida Amalie Christensen. His father leased the Oregaard estate. He was the nephew of railway pioneer Nicolai Abraham Brummer and author Therese Brummer and the cousin of railway engineer Valdemar Brummer. Carl Brummer was initially trained as a carpenter. Heattended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Danish Academy from 1888 to 1896. Career Brummer started his career by workeing for Ferdinand Meldahl and Hermann Baagøe Storck. Rydhave (also known as Villa Rydhave) is the official residence of the American ambassador to Denmark. The villa is situated at Strandvejen 259, on the border between Charlottenlund and Skovshoved, Gentofte Municipality. History Early history The house was built in 1885 for Emil Edvard Schnackenburg (18181894) and was designed by the architect Vilhelm Petersen. Emil Edvard was the son of Carl Gotlieb Schnackenburg and Henriette Elisabeth Schnackenburg. He grew up on the family's estate in Vejle, Brandbjerg, which was sold by his father in 1840. He had later married to Caroline Marie Bracht (1829–1908), whose father, Henning Johannes Peter von Bracht, owned Rydhave at Holstebro. Karen Harup
Karen Margrethe Harup Petersen (20 November 1924 – 9 July 2009) was a Danish swimmer. She competed in four events at the 1948 Summer Olympics and won three medals: a gold in the 100 m backstroke and silvers in the 400 m and 4 × 100 m freestyle, placing fourth in the 100 m freestyle. She won three more gold medals at the 1947 European Championships. During her career she held 30 national titles and set two world records in freestyle relay events. In 1949, she retired from competitions and started a five decades long career of a swimming coach. In 1975, she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Gammel Strand
Gammel Strand (modern Danish for "old beach"; originally meant "the old shoreline", i.e. prior to land reclamations) is a street and public square in central Copenhagen, Denmark. On the south side it borders on the narrow Slotsholmens Canal while the north side is lined by a row of brightly coloured houses from the 18th and 19th century. Across the canal, Thorvaldsens Museum and Christiansborg Palace are seen on the island Slotsholmen. The art gallery Kunstforeningen and the Ministry of Culture are the most notable institutions facing the street. Gentofte Municipality
Gentofte Municipality () is a municipality ( Danish, '' kommune'') in the Capital Region of Denmark (''Region Hovedstaden'') on the east coast of the island of Zealand (''Sjælland'') in eastern Denmark. It covers an area of , and has a total population of 75,076 (1. January 2025). Since 17 May 2021, its mayor has been Michael Fenger, a member of the Conservative People's Party (''Det Konservative Folkeparti'').
