Sjønstå River
The Sjønstå River (, known as the ''Langvasselva'' in its upper course) is a river in Fauske Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The river is located in the valley between the Fauske (town), town of Fauske and the village of Sulitjelma. Geography The Sjønstå River is the main river of the Sulitjelma drainage system. The stretch from its source at ''Langvatnet (Fauske), Langvatnet'' (Long Lake) to the village of Sjønstå, where it empties into the lake Øvervatnet () has been developed into the Sjønstå Hydroelectric Power Station. The river has many small tributaries. Norwegian County Road 830 runs parallel to the Sjønstå River. The Sulitjelma Line formerly ran along the river. The Drainage system (geomorphology), drainage system is regulated by many hydroelectric stations. The river is long and has a drainage basin of . The river's average Discharge (hydrology), discharge is . The river gently flows from Langvatnet, but it has some rapids. The only waterfall is lo ...

Drainage System (geomorphology)
In geomorphology, drainage systems, also known as river systems, are the patterns formed by the streams, rivers, and lakes in a particular drainage basin. They are governed by the topography of land, whether a particular region is dominated by hard or soft rocks, and the gradient of the land. Geomorphologists and hydrologists often view streams as part of drainage basins (and tributary, sub-basins). This is the Topography, topographic region from which a stream receives Surface runoff, runoff, throughflow, and its saturated equivalent, groundwater flow. The number, size, and shape of the drainage basins varies and the larger and more detailed the topographic map, the more information is available. Drainage patterns Per the lie of Channel (geography), channels, drainage systems can fall into one of several categories, known as drainage patterns. These depend on the topography and geology of the land. All forms of transitions can occur between parallel, dendritic, and trellis patter ...

Norwegian Water Resources And Energy Directorate
The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate ( or NVE) is a Norwegian government agency established in 1921. It is under the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy and regulates the country's water resources and energy supply. Its mandate includes contingency planning for floods, serving as a centre of expertise for hydrology, research and development, and increasing energy efficiency. It is a member of the Council of European Energy Regulators. The directorate is based in Oslo and has regional offices in Hamar, Førde, Tønsberg, Trondheim, and Narvik. It also establishes international contacts and undertakes work abroad in developing countries for the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation. , it had over 400 employees. Its website includes statistics on Norwegian energy consumption, production, and prices and a database of Norwegian lakes and water catchment areas. The directorate is administratively responsible for the Watercourse Regulation Act (1917), Indu ...

Daja Hydroelectric Power Station
The Daja Hydroelectric Power Station ( or ''Daja kraftstasjon'') is a hydroelectric power station in Fauske Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is located about east-southeast of Jakobsbakken. The plant utilizes a drop of in the Balmi River between two lakes: '' Kjelvatnet'' ( or ''Giebnejávri'') at an elevation of and ''Nedre Daja'' (Lower Lake Daja; also , ) at an elevation of . The level of ''Kjelvatnet'' is regulated with water from two other lakes: ''Balvatnet'' () and Big Lake Dorro (, ). ''Nedre Daja'' is too small a body of water to rely on, and so electricity production must be coordinated with the Fagerli Hydroelectric Power Station, which utilizes the drop from ''Nedre Daja'' to '' Langvatnet'' (Long Lake). Today the plant has an installed capacity of , with an average annual production of about 157 GWh from a catchment area of . The plant was built in 1958 by Balmi Kraftlag with Sulitjelma Mines as the main shareholder at 60%; Salten Kraftsamband ...

The plant operates at an installed capacity of , with an average annual production of about . It is owned by Salten Kraftsamband and came into operation in 1975. The Fagerli plant was the first one built by Salten Kraftsamband, in cooperation with Sulitjelma Mines. The old Fagerli Power Station By 1898 a power station had been set up at the outflow of the Balmi River into ''Langvatnet'', also named the Fagerli Power Station. It was built by Sulitjelma Mines and supplied electricity for general use in Sulitjelma and to the mine. It originally had an installed capacity of 175 Volt-ampere, kVA and a voltage of 5 Volt, kV. Discharge (hydrology)
In hydrology, discharge is the volumetric flow rate (volume per time, in units of m3/h or ft3/h) of a stream. It equals the product of average flow velocity (with dimension of length per time, in m/h or ft/h) and the cross-sectional area (in m2 or ft2). It includes any suspended solids (e.g. sediment), dissolved chemicals like (aq), or biologic material (e.g. diatoms) in addition to the water itself. Terms may vary between disciplines. For example, a fluvial hydrologist studying natural river systems may define discharge as streamflow, whereas an engineer operating a reservoir system may equate it with outflow, contrasted with inflow. Formulation A discharge is a measure of the quantity of any fluid flow over unit time. The quantity may be either volume or mass. Thus the water discharge of a tap (faucet) can be measured with a measuring jug and a stopwatch. Here the discharge might be 1 litre per 15 seconds, equivalent to 67 ml/second or 4 litres/minute. This is an average meas ...

Drainage Basin
A drainage basin is an area of land in which all flowing surface water converges to a single point, such as a river mouth, or flows into another body of water, such as a lake or ocean. A basin is separated from adjacent basins by a perimeter, the drainage divide, made up of a succession of elevated features, such as ridges and hills. A basin may consist of smaller basins that merge at river confluences, forming a hierarchical pattern. Other terms for a drainage basin are catchment area, catchment basin, drainage area, river basin, water basin, and impluvium. In North America, they are commonly called a watershed, though in other English-speaking places, " watershed" is used only in its original sense, that of the drainage divide line. A drainage basin's boundaries are determined by watershed delineation, a common task in environmental engineering and science. In a closed drainage basin, or endorheic basin, rather than flowing to the ocean, water converges toward the ...

Sulitjelma Line
The Sulitjelma Line () was a railway line that ran between Finneid in the town of Fauske to the village of Sulitjelma near the border with Sweden. For a history of the line see Bjerke, Thor, "Sulitjelmabanen" (1983, Norsk Jernbaneklubb)(). The railway line was entirely inside Fauske Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The line was built in 1891, over time it was lengthened until 1958 when it was connected to the Nordland Line (having a different rail gauge) and the sea port at Finneid. It existed as a branch of the Nordland Line from 1958 until 1972 when the line was closed and removed. The railway line followed the path of the present-day Norwegian County Road 830. History Construction of the line started in May 1891 when the mining company in Sulitjelma decided to build a railway between Sjønstå and Fossen. Sjønstå is located on the shore of the lake Øvervatnet, close to sea level. The track was immediately extended along the Sjønstå River to Hellarmo the foll ...
