''Sing!'' is an album by Israeli folk duo Esther & Abi Ofarim. It was released on Philips Records in 1966. The album was released as ''The New Esther & Abi Ofarim Album'' in the UK, ''Sing Hallelujah!'' in the Netherlands, and ''Das Neue Esther & Abi Ofarim Album'' in Germany. Recording and release The album was produced by Abi Ofarim and musical direction by Hans Hammerschmid. Esther & Abi Ofarim's cover of " Sing Hallelujah" by Mike Settle was released as a single in 1966, reaching No. 30 on the German singles chart. They also cover songs by Bob Dylan, Ian Tyson, and the traditional negro spiritual "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child." The single "Die Wahrheit (Die Fahrt ins Heu)" was included on the German version of the album. Esther & Abi Ofarim
Esther & Abi Ofarim were an Israeli musical duo active during the 1960s, consisting of husband and wife Abi Ofarim and Esther Ofarim. They enjoyed particular success in Germany. They had hits in Europe with their songs "One More Dance," "Morning of My Life," and " Cinderella Rockefella." Career Esther Zaied (b. June 13, 1941) met guitarist and dancer Abraham "Abi" Reichstadt (October 5, 1937 – May 4, 2018) in their native country, Israel, in 1958. Esther, who had been singing since she was a child, was a student in Abi's dance studio in Haifa. They married on December 11, 1958. After Esther served four months in the Israeli Army, they began singing at home for fun before pursuing a professional music career together. Esther joined the group Ofarim, which was founded by Abi and Shmulik Kraus in 1958. The group changed its name to the Ofarim Trio and performed around Haifa, but Shmulik soon left the group. Esther (; ), originally Hadassah (; ), is the eponymous heroine of the Book of Esther in the Hebrew Bible. According to the biblical narrative, which is set in the Achaemenid Empire, the Persian king Ahasuerus falls in love with Esther and marries her. His grand vizier Haman is offended by Esther's cousin and guardian Mordecai because of his refusal to bow before him; bowing in front of another person was a prominent gesture of respect in Persian society, but deemed unacceptable by Mordecai, who believes that a Jew should only express submissiveness to God. Consequently, Haman plots to have all of Persia's Jews killed, and eventually convinces Ahasuerus to permit him to do so. However, Esther foils the plan by revealing and decrying Haman's plans to Ahasuerus, who then has Haman executed and grants permission to the Jews to take up arms against their enemies; Esther is hailed for her courage and for working to save the Jewish nation from eradication. Lee Elhardt Hays (March 14, 1914 – August 26, 1981) was an American folk singer and songwriter, best known for singing bass with the Weavers. Throughout his life, he was concerned with overcoming racism, inequality, and violence in society. He wrote or cowrote " Lonesome Traveller", "Wasn't That a Time?", " If I Had a Hammer", and " Kisses Sweeter than Wine", which became hits and Weavers' staples. He also familiarized audiences with songs of the 1930s labor movement, such as " We Shall Not Be Moved". Childhood Hays came naturally by his interest in folk music since his uncle was the eminent Missouri and Arkansas folklorist Vance Randolph, author of, among other works, the bestselling ''Pissing in the Snow and Other Ozark Folktales'' and ''Who Blewed Up the Church House?''. "Someday Soon" is a song composed by Canadian singer-songwriter Ian Tyson who recorded the song with Sylvia Tyson, Sylvia Fricker as the duo Ian & Sylvia in 1963. Cited by Richie Unterberger of Allmusic as "clearly point[ing] toward [its writer's] future C&W/cowboy direction", "Someday Soon" would be brought to prominence via a 1968 recording by Judy Collins, and subsequently recorded by a number of artists primarily in the country music, country and western field. The Skye Boat Song
"The Skye Boat Song" (Roud 3772) is a late 19th-century Scottish song adaptation of a Gaelic song composed c.1782 by William Ross, entitled ''Cuachag nan Craobh'' ("Cuckoo of the Tree"). In the original song, the composer laments to a cuckoo that his unrequited love, Lady Marion Ross, is rejecting him. The 19th century English lyrics instead evoked the journey of Prince Charles Edward Stuart ("Bonnie Prince Charlie") from Benbecula to the Isle of Skye as he evaded capture by government soldiers after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Sir Harold Boulton, 2nd Baronet composed the new lyrics to Ross's song which had been heard by Anne Campbell MacLeod in the 1870s, and the line "Over the Sea to Skye" is now a cornerstone of the tourism industry on the Isle of Skye. Lonesome Traveler is a song written by Lee Hays who first recorded it in 1950 with The Weavers featuring his vocals and the banjo, guitar and vocal harmonies of fellow Weavers, Pete Seeger, Fred Hellerman and Ronnie Gilbert.
