Simon Cross
Simon James Cross (born 31 May 1965 in Hereford, England) is a former motorcycle speedway rider who spent most of his career with the Cradley Heathens. Career Cross began his British leagues speedway career riding for the Oxford Cheetahs during the 1982 National League season. The following season, as a Weymouth Wildcats rider, he won the National League Pairs Championship with Martin Yeates. In early 1987, Cross was part of a touring troupe to Australia, which included (among others) World Champion Hans Nielsen, Tommy Knudsen, Shawn Moran and Rick Miller. While in Australia he won the 1986/87 Western Australian State Championship at the Claremont Speedway in Perth. Also in 1987, Cross qualified for his first and only World Final in the 1987 Individual Speedway World Championship, run over two days at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam. Hereford
Hereford ( ) is a cathedral city and the county town of the ceremonial county of Herefordshire, England. Martin Yeates
Martin Yeates (born 24 November 1953 in Salisbury, England) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career Yeates prominently rode for the Poole Pirates, Weymouth Wildcats and Oxford Cheetahs. In 1980 he signed for Weymouth from Poole for a National League record at the time of £7,000. In 1982, he won the National League Pairs, partnering Simon Wigg for Weymouth, during the 1982 National League season. The following season he helped Weymouth retain the pairs title, but this time rode with Simon Cross. In 1984, he reached the 1984 Overseas final round of the Speedway World Championship, becoming the first National League rider to reach that stage. His involvement with Speedway continued with association with Swindon Robins as Team Manager and Co-Promoter. Odsal Stadium
Odsal Stadium (known as Bartercard Odsal Stadium for sponsorship reasons) is a multi-purpose stadium, multipurpose stadium in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. The stadium is currently the home of Bradford Bulls rugby league football club and Yorstox Stock Cars who host regular monthly meetings of BriSCA Formula 1 Stock Cars, BriSCA F1 Stock Cars, and BriSCA Formula 2 Stock Cars, BriSCA F2 Stock Cars. 1989 Speedway World Team Cup
The 1989 Speedway World Team Cup was the 30th edition of the FIM Speedway World Team Cup to determine the team world champions. The final was staged at Odsal Stadium, Bradford, England. The English team dominated the meeting, following near tragedy for Denmark. Jeremy Doncaster, Kelvin Tatum, Paul Thorp and Simon Wigg defeated Denmark, Sweden and the USA in a single meeting final. The Danish run of sixth consecutive titles finally came to an end and England once more went top of the all-time list, with nine titles. The World Cup Final saw the end of the career of three time World Champion Erik Gundersen of Denmark. In the first race of the meeting, Gundersen won the start from gate 4 and headed the field into the first turn. England National Speedway Team
The Great Britain national speedway team (formerly the England speedway team) is one of the major teams in international motorcycle speedway. The team is managed by former Great Britain riders Oliver Allen and Simon Stead, and captained by the Tai Woffinden. The team raced as England from 1928 to 1961 and again from 1974 to 2000. They have raced as Great Britain from 1962 to 1973 and since 2001. History The national speedway team held test matches against the Australia as early as 1928, although the first official test match is listed as 30 June 1930 at Wimbledon Stadium. The team won the Speedway World Team Cup on five occasions as England and four times as Great Britain from 1968 to 1989. Speedway World Pairs Championship
The Speedway World Pairs Championship was an annual motorcycle speedway event held annually in different countries. The first competition was held in 1968, and the final competition was held in 1993. In 1994, it was merged with the World Team Cup to create the Speedway World Cup, which held its final edition in 2017. The concept of an international pairs championship was re-established in the form of the Speedway of Nations, held for the first time in 2018. Rules The final was competed between seven national teams, and two riders represented each national team. Each pairing rode against each other once. The pair with the highest combined score were declared the Champions. From 1991, a third rider could act as a reserve. Kelvin Tatum
Kelvin Martin Tatum Order of the British Empire, MBE (born 8 February 1964) is a former British international motorcycle speedway and grasstrack rider. He earned 65 international caps for the England national speedway team. Career Tatum attended Brighton College from 1977 to 1980. He started riding speedway bikes at Hackney Hawks, Hackney's training school at Hackney Wick Stadium in the winter of 1982-83. He was given his first team place at Hackney's London rivals, Wimbledon Dons, riding in the top flight British League in 1983. He finished the season with an Calculated Match Average, average of over six points per meeting. In 1985, he signed for Coventry Bees from Wimbledon for £18,000, staying there for the next six seasons. Olympic Stadium (Amsterdam)
The Olympic Stadium (, ) is a sporting venue which was used as the main stadium for the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. The venue is currently used mostly for Sport of athletics, athletics, other sports events and music concerts. When completed, the stadium had a capacity of 31,600. Following the completion of the rival De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam in 1937, the Amsterdam authorities increased the capacity of the Olympic Stadium to 64,000 by adding a second ring to the stadium. 1987 Individual Speedway World Championship
The 1987 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 42nd edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. It was contested for the one and only time over two days in the Netherlands. The scores from both meetings were combined to produce the eventual winner. With the chances of a surprise winner reduced due to two races being held it was the favourite Hans Nielsen that duly obliged with his second World crown. Nielsen had trailed after day one by 1 point to great rival Erik Gundersen and the American Sam Ermolenko. However, in trademark style Nielsen produced a 15-point maximum on day two to wrap up the World Title, with Gundersen claiming silver and Ermolenko bronze. Claremont Speedway
The Claremont Speedway was a racing circuit in the grounds of the Claremont Showground in the suburb of Claremont in Western Australia's capital city of Perth. The speedway held its first meeting on 14 May 1927, and its final meeting on 31 March 2000. History Barriers and fences were improved over time to prevent out of control vehicles from entering the spectator areas. During its 72-year operation the speedway hosted numerous Western Australian championships as well as national championships including the Australian Sprintcar Championship, the Australian Speedcar Championship, the Australian Super Sedan Championship, the Australian Solo Championship, and the Australian Sidecar Championship. Rick Miller (speedway Rider)
Richard Leonard Miller (born 12 January 1961, Reseda, Los Angeles, Reseda, California) is a former American international motorcycle speedway rider, and an automotive and motorcycle stuntman. He earned 34 caps for the United States national speedway team. Career Miller won two national BMX titles as a Webco-sponsored rider in his early teens. Miller then rode motocross in the southern California area before switching to Speedway. Miller started his speedway career in 1981, became pro the next year and won rookie of the year. Speedway credits for 1982 include the Ventura Raceway, Ventura track championship and the US Open National Championship in Owego (town), New York, Owego, New York. Shawn Moran (born November 19, 1961, in Lakewood, California) is an American former professional motorcycle speedway rider who was one of the most popular and talented riders ever to race for Sheffield Tigers. He earned 74 caps for the United States national speedway team.
