Sigma Gamma Rho
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. () is a historically African American sorority. The sorority was founded on November 12, 1922. The organization was formed as a sorority in 1922, by seven African American women in Indianapolis, Indiana. At its inception, the sorority was created to support Black women pursuing degrees in education. It was incorporated within Indiana in November 1922 as a sorority for school teachers and held their first national conference in 1925. The sorority became a national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, when a charter was granted to the Alpha chapter then established at Butler University that year. The sorority was incorporated as a national collegiate sorority in 1930. Sigma Gamma Rho is the only sorority of the four historically African American National Pan-Hellenic Council sororities founded at a predominantly White institution instead of at Howard University. Robert Brokenburr
Robert Lee Brokenburr (November 16, 1886 – March 24, 1974) was an American attorney, civil rights leader, and state legislator in Indiana. After several election campaigns, Brokenburr ran as a Republican for an Indiana Senate seat in 1940 and became the first African-American elected to the body where he served for 20 years. Prior to running for office, Brokenburr worked as counsel and general manager for the Madame C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company while carrying on his own practice litigating civil rights cases. Early life and education Robert Lee Brokenburr was born on November 16, 1886, in Phoebus, Virginia. His father, Benjamin Brokenburr, was emancipated from slavery as a child. Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, previously Mary Lou Allison Little, previously Mary Lou Allison, (November 2, 1896 – March 8, 1992) was an American educator and the primary founder of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority, as well as its first national president from 1925 to 1926. She taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District for 35 years through her retirement in 1967. Originally founded as a professional organization raising standards among teachers, the historically African American sorority broadened its focus and had 70,000 members in 400 chapters across the United States and the Caribbean by the time of her death.
