Showaddywaddy
Showaddywaddy are a rock and roll group from Leicester, England. They specialise in revivals of hit songs from the 1950s and early 1960s, while also issuing original material. They have spent 209 weeks on the UK Singles Chart, and have had 10 Top Ten singles, one reaching number one. Formation The band was formed in 1973 by the amalgamation of two groups, Choise (Dave Bartram, Trevor Oakes, Al James, and Romeo Challenger) and the Golden Hammers (Buddy Gask, Russ Field, Rod Deas, and Malcolm Allured), the latter often known simply as The Hammers. They both played at the Fosse Way pub in Leicester, and soon discovered shared musical tastes. After playing together in jamming sessions, they joined together permanently, and Showaddywaddy were born. Al James (bassist)
Geoffrey Betts, known as Al James, was a British bassist in the British rock and roll revival band Showaddywaddy. Early life James was born in 1945 or 1946. He learned to play guitar and bass guitar at age 13. Career James began his musical career in the group Choise, composed of James, guitarist Trevor Oakes, singer Dave Bartram, and drummer Romeo Challenger. The group released a song in 1969. In 1973, James co-founded Showaddywaddy. He served as the band's second bassist, as well as a backing singer along with Buddy Gask. He occasionally sang lead vocals, including on “King Of The Jive” (1974), “Rocker Boots” (1975), “Record Machine” (1976), “Superstar” (1977), “Feelin’” (1977), “Teen Canteen” (1980) and “Do It Again” (1982), and also on a cover of “ Say Mama” (1976) and " Hound Dog". Romeo Challenger
Romeo Alexander Challenger (born 19 May 1950) is an Antiguan-born English musician. He has been the drummer for the rock band Showaddywaddy since 1973 and seminal progressive rock band Black Widow. Biography Challenger was born 19 May 1950 in St. John's, Antigua, British Leeward Islands. In 1955, he moved with his family to England. He began playing the drums as a teenager in the mid-1960s. He played in several groups, including progressive rock/hard rock band Black Widow in the early 1970s. In 1973, he became one of two drummers (The other being Malcolm Allured) for the rock and roll band Showaddywaddy. Showaddywaddy had ten singles reach the top ten of the UK Singles Chart, including the 1976 number-one " Under the Moon of Love". Challenger played in the Leicester Boys' football team with Peter Shilton and Jeff Blockley, who both went on to enjoy professional careers. Trevor Oakes
Trevor Oakes (born 9 September 1946) is an English retired Glam rock guitarist and songwriter. Oakes is best known for being the guitarist and saxophonist for Showaddywaddy, a band he was in from 1973 until 2009. He was one of the main songwriters for the band, penning most of their minor hits and album track with lead singer Dave Bartram. Oakes played saxophone on stage, although on the actual records the saxophone was played by session musician Jeff Daly. Trevor retired from the group in 2009, and played his last gig with the band in 2008. He is the father to footballers Scott and Stefan Oakes. Career Oakes played in the group "Choise" who in 1973, were merged with the band "The Golden Hammers" to form Showaddywaddy. "Heartbeat" is a rockabilly song originally recorded by Bob Montgomery and credited to Norman Petty. It was recorded most famously by Buddy Holly in 1958. The B-side of the single was "Well... All Right" (Buddy Holly, Norman Petty, Jerry Allison, Joe Mauldin). "Dancin' Party" is a song written by Kal Mann and Dave Appell and performed by Chubby Checker. In 1962, the track reached No. 12 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and No. 19 on the Canadian and UK Singles Charts. It was featured on his 1963 compilation album, ''Chubby Checker's Biggest Hits''. Bell Records was an American record label founded in 1952 in New York City by Arthur Shimkin, the owner of the children's record label Golden Records, and initially a unit of Pocket Books, after the rights to the name were acquired from Benny Bell, who used the Bell name to issue risqué novelty records. A British branch was also active in the 1960s and 1970s. ''New Faces'' is a British television talent show that aired in the 1970s and 1980s. It has been hosted by Leslie Crowther, Derek Hobson and Marti Caine. It was produced for the ITV network by ATV, and later by Central. Original series: 1973–1978 The show first aired as a pilot on the ATV network on 31 May 1973 with host Leslie Crowther and a judging panel consisting of Noele Gordon, Tony Hatch, Clive James and John Smith assessing performances from ten acts looking for a break in show business.
