Shottsville, Alabama
Shottsville is an unincorporated community in Marion County, Alabama, Marion County, in the U.S. state of Alabama, located 15 miles northwest of Hamilton, Alabama, Hamilton. History Shottsville is named for Lovid McCindry Shotts (b. 1818), who settled in the area in 1839 and who became the town's first postmaster in 1874. The post office operated under the name Shottsville from 1874 to 1905. Prior to being given the name Shottsville, the town was known locally by the name "Stone Town," so-called for the large number of residents in the region who bore the surname Stone. On April 27, 2011, the town was hit by the 2011 Smithville, Mississippi, tornado, Smithville, Mississippi EF5 tornado. After crossing the state line, it produced Enhanced Fujita scale, EF3 damage in the community. Marion County is a county of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census the population was 29,341. The county seat is Hamilton. The county was created by an act of the Alabama Territorial General Assembly on February 13, 1818. The county seat was originally established in Pikeville in 1820, and moved to Hamilton in 1881. The county was named by planter and US Indian agent John Dabney Terrell, Sr., in recognition of General Francis Marion of South Carolina. Area codes 205 and 659 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the western and central parts of the U.S. State of Alabama, including the cities of Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. Area code 205 was one of the original area codes created in 1947 when the NANP was placed in operation by AT&T. It encompassed the entire state, making Alabama one of 34 states served by a single numbering plan area. By the 1990s, 205 was on the brink of exhaustion due to the state's growth and the proliferation of cell phones and pagers. Hamilton, Alabama
Hamilton is a city in and the county seat of Marion County, Alabama, United States. It incorporated in 1896 and since 1980 has been the county's largest city, surpassing Winfield. It was previously the largest town in 1910. At the 2020 census, the population was 7,042. History Hamilton was founded in the early 19th century by settlers who moved to the Alabama Territory from Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, Georgia and the Carolinas. It is built upon lands that once served as "hunting grounds" for the Chickasaw people. The city was first called "Toll Gate", but its name later changed in honor of one of its distinguished citizens, Captain Albert James Hamilton (known as A.J.
