Rockingham is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is located in the outer south-western suburbs of Perth. Rockingham has been held at all times by the Labor Party, and currently is held by Mark McGowan, the Premier of Western Australia. Geography The electorate is a compact, urban district centred on the coastal community of Rockingham, a satellite suburb to the south-west of Perth. Peron is an outer southern suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, and is located within the City of Rockingham. The suburb was gazetted in 1974. It is named for its location at Cape Peron although that land feature and the immediate locality are often called "Point Peron", both locally and in written references, and this has influenced the naming of roads and features in the locality. Safety Bay is an outer southern suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, located on the coast within the City of Rockingham. History Safety Bay was originally a small cove on the north shore of Warnbro Sound, now encompassed by Safety Bay Road, Berry Street and Janet Road. It had been noted by surveyor-general John Septimus Roe in 1837 as "a safe, well protected boat anchorage" and he gave it the appropriate name of Safety Bay. In the mid-1830s, Thomas Peel became interested in Safety Bay as a potential harbour to establish a base for whaling operations as well as a point from which inland stands of jarrah could be exported. After initial approval by Governor Stirling and Surveyor-General J. S. The Shoalwater Islands Marine Park is a state park, protected marine park located in Western Australia and stretches from the northern point of the Garden Island (Western Australia), Garden Island Causeway to the southern point of Becher Point. Cape Peron
Cape Peron is a headland at Rockingham, at the southern end of Cockburn Sound in Western Australia. The cape is locally known as Point Peron, and is noted for its protected beaches, limestone cliffs, reefs and panoramic views. Cape Peron includes the suburb of Peron and "Point Peron" is the designation of a minor promontory on the south side of the cape's extremity. The feature was named after the French naturalist and zoologist François Péron, who accompanied the expedition of Nicolas Baudin along the western coast of Australia in 1801. A causeway was constructed in 1973 between Cape Peron and Garden Island to carry vehicular traffic between the mainland and the island. Penguin Island (Western Australia)
Penguin Island is a island off the coast near Perth, approximately from Shoalwater. It is home to a colony of approximately 250 little penguins, the largest population of the birds in Western Australia. Since 2007, the island had experienced an 80 percent decline in penguin numbers from a peak of 1,700 that year. The waters surrounding the island make up the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. Transport Regular ferries carry tourists to and from the island and other marine-park sights, the journey taking 5 minutes from Mersey point. The island can also be reached by private boat, kayaking, swimming, or walking across a sandbar, most of which is under varying depths of water. The Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPAW) advises against the sandbar walk, as weather conditions can change quickly making the crossing dangerous, which has resulted in several drownings.
