Shihad
Shihad were a Rock music, rock band formed in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1988. The band consisted of founders Tom Larkin (musician), Tom Larkin (drums, backing vocals, samplers), Phil Knight (lead guitar, synthesiser, backing vocals) and Jon Toogood (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), who were joined by Karl Kippenberger (bass guitar, backing vocals) in 1991. The band were known as Pacifier between 2002 and 2004. Six of Shihad's studio albums have peaked at number one–''The General Electric'' (October 1999), ''Pacifier (Shihad album), Pacifier'' (September 2002), ''Beautiful Machine'' (April 2008), ''Ignite (Shihad album), Ignite'' (September 2010), ''FVEY (album), FVEY'' (August 2014) and ''Old Gods'' (October 2021). FVEY (album)
''FVEY'' (pronounced ''Five Eyes'') is the ninth studio album by New Zealand alternative rock band Shihad, released on 8 August 2014. The album debuted at number one on the New Zealand albums chart, making it Shihad's fifth New Zealand number one album. The chart position also makes Shihad the only New Zealand band to have five number one albums, tying them with solo artist Hayley Westenra who also has five number one albums. The album name is a reference to "Five Eyes", often abbreviated as FVEY, an intelligence alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. Jon Toogood
Jonathan Charles Toogood (born 9 August 1971) is a New Zealand musician who is the frontman (lead vocals and guitar) of the rock band Shihad. He started playing guitar when he was "8 or 9" and became friends with Tom Larkin (musician), Tom Larkin while at Wellington High School, New Zealand, Wellington High School. Toogood and Larkin were fans of AC/DC and Metallica and started Shihad in 1988. Non-Shihad projects SML (mid-1990s) After their respective bands were established on Wildside Records Toogood, Larkin, and Nigel Reagan (Head Like a Hole (band), Head Like a Hole) had a side project called SML. Old Gods
''Old Gods'' is the tenth and final studio album by New Zealand rock band Shihad, released on 8 October 2021. The album debuted at number one in New Zealand. Production Much of the album was inspired by Jon Toogood's experiences after his conversion to Islam, before his marriage to Dana Salih in Sudan in 2014, and the band's disgust at the rise of Conservative politicians in the world. The song "Little Demons" was one of the first songs written for the album, inspired by a televised Australian political debate where a Liberal Party of Australia told an Aboriginal Australian woman to call the police when she experiences racist threats. ''Beautiful Machine'' is the seventh studio album by Shihad and was released on 21 April 2008 in New Zealand and 17 May 2008 in Australia. The album is much softer than previous Shihad releases, including many electronica elements and '80s backing rhythms - to the point where lead singer Jon Toogood has called some tracks "dance songs". Tom Larkin (musician)
Tom Larkin (born 18 September 1971) is a New Zealand musician and record producer. He is the drummer, backing vocalist and a founding member of the alternative rock band Shihad. He grew up in Wellington, New Zealand but now lives in Melbourne in Australia. Early life and family Larkin was born in Wellington, New Zealand, to Thomas Cedric Larkin and Sarah Marianne Williams. As a kid, he often played the drums so loud in his parents big Kelburn house in Wellington, that the neighbours sometimes complained. While at school at Wellington High in the late 1980s he met Jon Toogood and together they former Shihad back in 1988. The first gig was at the Clarendon Tavern in Courtenay Place which was the first of thousands of live gigs performed by the band over many years. Pacifier (Shihad Album)
''Pacifier'' (re-released as ''The Pacifier Album'') is the fifth studio album released by New Zealand rock band Shihad. At the time of the release, they were performing under the name Pacifier due to controversy surrounding the similarity of the word Shihad to jihad. The name ''Pacifier'' was derived from the single of the same name from their previous album, ''The General Electric''. Released on 19 August 2002, songs such as "Run" and "Bullitproof" went on to become hit singles. Karl Kippenberger
Karl Brenton Jamie Kippenberger (born 26 August 1973) is a New Zealand musician, best known as the bass guitarist for the rock band Shihad. Biography He is the grandson of Captain E.T Kippenberger, great nephew of Major-General Sir Howard Kippenberger. His mother is of Cook Islands descent, from the islands of Rarotonga, Mangaia, and Atiu. Kippenberger grew up in Pukerua Bay just north of Wellington and attended Kāpiti College (formerly Raumati District High School). Kāpiti College is also the same high school that produced film director Peter Jackson, former All Black Christian Cullen as well as several other well-known Kiwi musicians, including Ara Adams-Tamatea of Katchafire and Danny Rodda. The APRA Top 100 New Zealand Songs of All Time is a selection of New Zealand songs as voted in 2001 by members of the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA). The top 30 of this selection was used to create the '' Nature's Best'' CD and the rest of the list for follow-up compilations. A similar list was made in Australia of the top 30 Australian songs. The Adults
The Adults is a "collaborative name" used for two different recording projects led by New Zealand musician and Shihad frontman Jon Toogood. The first iteration of the Adults was a New Zealand rock supergroup that released a self-titled album in 2011. In 2018 a completely different set of musicians (other than Toogood) performed on Haja, an album that blended Aghani Al-Banat (a Sudanese style that translates to "girls' music" and is performed at weddings) with New Zealand hip hop. Wellington High School is a co-educational secondary school in the CBD of Wellington, New Zealand. It has a role of approximately 1600 students. It was founded in 1886 as the Wellington College of Design (later the Wellington Technical School), to provide a more practical education than that offered by the existing schools. In 1905 it became the first coeducational daytime Technical College in New Zealand.
