Shi Jiaonai
Shi Jiaonai (; 29 November 1920 – 24 November 2018) was a Chinese plant physiologist. He was a member of the China Democratic League (''Minmeng''). Biography Shi was born in Jinjiang, Fujian, Jinjiang, Fujian, on November 29, 1920 and moved to the Philippines when he was ten. He returned to China in 1940. In 1944 he graduated from Zhejiang University, where he majored in botany. In 1991 he was elected a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was a researcher at the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences before his death in November 2018. Shī (施) is a Chinese surname. It is written as Sze or Sy in Cantonese or Hokkien romanisation. According to a 2013 study it was the 106th most common name, being shared by 2.06 million people or 0.150% of the population, with Jiangsu being the province with the most people. Plants are predominantly photosynthetic eukaryotes of the kingdom Plantae. Historically, the plant kingdom encompassed all living things that were not animals, and included algae and fungi; however, all current definitions of Plantae exclude the fungi and some algae, as well as the prokaryotes (the archaea and bacteria). The Hokkien () variety of Chinese is a Southern Min language native to and originating from the Minnan region, where it is widely spoken in the south-eastern part of Fujian in southeastern mainland China.
