Shell Beach, La Jolla
Shell Beach is a small beach in La Jolla, a community of San Diego, California, United States. It is accessed via a flight of concrete steps that start at the south end of Ellen Browning Scripps Park. The beach is located immediately north of Children's Pool Beach, south of Boomer Beach and La Jolla Cove. During extreme low tides, the southern end of Shell Beach has an interesting tidepool-like area, with many marine creatures visible. Because of the presence of reef structures and rip currents that can be hazardous to scuba divers, the San Diego Council of Divers provides a "Rocks, Rips and Reefs" tour for the area. Visible to the south a short distance out from Shell Beach is Seal Rock, which often has several harbor seals resting on it. There is the presence of sea glass on the beach. Children's Pool Beach
Children's Pool Beach (also known as Casa Beach) is a small sandy beach in La Jolla, a community of San Diego, California. The Children's Pool earned its name after the construction of a concrete breakwater in 1931. The structure was gifted to the community of La Jolla by local philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps, who paid for the construction of a breakwater project in order to create a place where children could play and swim that would be protected from waves. La Jolla Cove
La Jolla Cove is a small cove with a beach that is surrounded by cliffs in La Jolla, a community of San Diego, California. Point La Jolla forms the south side of the cove. The area is protected as part of a marine reserve and is popular with snorkelers, swimmers and scuba divers. The swells that often roll in from the open ocean can be large and strong. The water temperature is often a little colder than the average San Diego beach. Tidepool
A tide pool or rock pool is a shallow pool of seawater that forms on the rocky intertidal shore. These pools typically range from a few inches to a few feet deep and a few feet across. Many of these pools exist as separate bodies of water only at low tide, as seawater gets trapped when the tide recedes. Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon. Rip Current
A rip current (or just rip) is a specific type of water current that can occur near beaches where waves break. A rip is a strong, localized, and narrow current of water that moves directly away from the shore by cutting through the lines of breaking waves, like a river flowing out to sea. The force of the current in a rip is strongest and fastest next to the surface of the water. Rip currents can be hazardous to people in the water. Swimmers who are caught in a rip current and who do not understand what is happening, or who may not have the necessary water skills, may panic, or they may exhaust themselves by trying to swim directly against the flow of water.
