Shelford, Victoria
Shelford is a town in Victoria, Australia. The locality is in the Golden Plains Shire near the regional city of Geelong and west of the state capital, Melbourne. Shelford is nestled in a valley divided by the Leigh River, Golf Hill Station was established in 1836 on the river banks. In 1839 George Russell bought land from the crown to move his HQ to there. Most of the local squatters came from Scotland so the town had a strong Presbyterian feel and had two churches. The Post Office opened on 1 July 1847 with the town names ''The Leigh'' which was renamed ''Shelford'' in 1854. By 1865 the town had a court house, post office, a mechanics institute and two hotels. In 1874 the Shelford Bridge was constructed using iron imported from Liverpool. In about 1890 Janet Biddlecombe started to manage the Golf Hill station taking over from her brother. Inverleigh, Victoria
Inverleigh is a town in Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia located west from the City of Geelong, Victoria, Geelong and from the state capital, Melbourne. The town is divided between Golden Plains Shire and Surf Coast Shire. In the 2021 Australian census, 2021 census, the central area of Inverleigh had a population of 1,746. Shelford Bridge
The Shelford Bridge is an important early wrought iron box girder road bridge built in 1873-4 over the River Leigh and designed by Charles Anthony Corbett Wilson (1827–1923) on the main road from Melbourne to Portland in Victoria, Australia. The crossing of the Leigh (or Yarrowee) River may lay claim to the first bridge built in Victoria, when a timber structure was erected in 1840. This was replaced in 1851 with a more substantial bridge on bluestone abutments and piers, and in turn the present iron bridge. The bridge stands on bluestone abutments and piers and has two half-through, wrought iron, box girders continuous over three spans, supporting a riveted wrought iron frame deck. The Victorian Heritage Register (VHR) lists places deemed to be of cultural heritage significance to the State of Victoria, Australia. It has statutory weight under the Heritage Act 2017. The Minister for Planning is the responsible Minister. Janet Biddlecombe
Janet Biddlecombe (24 April 1866 – 15 February 1954) was an Australian pastoralist and philanthropist. Life Biddlecombe was born in 1866 in Melbourne. Her parents were Euphemia Leslie (born Carstairs) and George Russell and she was the last of their eight children. She had only one brother and her mother died when she was young. Her father was a pastoralist. Golf Hill Station at Shelford in Victoria state had been established in 1836 on the banks of a river. In 1839, her father bought land from the crown to build a home and move his HQ to Shelford. Most of the local squatters and her parents had come from Scotland so the town had a strong Presbyterian feel. The small town expanded as her father rented out space for new businesses. Golden Plains Shire
The Golden Plains Shire is a local government area in Victoria, Australia, located in the central-western part of the state. It covers an area of and in June 2018, had a population of 23,120. It includes the towns of Bannockburn, Inverleigh, Lethbridge, Linton, Rokewood, Smythesdale, Teesdale and Meredith. The Shire was formed on 6 May 1994 by the amalgamation of the Shire of Bannockburn (the part remaining after part of it was amalgamated with several other councils to form the new City of Greater Geelong in May 1993), Shire of Leigh, part of the Shire of Grenville and part of the Shire of Buninyong.
