Shawnee Township is one of ten townships in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, USA. As of the 2000 census, its population was 3,460. Shawnee Township was established in 1848, and named after the Shawnee Indians. Geography Shawnee Township covers an area of and contains one incorporated settlement, Pocahontas. It contains two cemeteries: Apple Creek and Darby. A township in some states of the United States is a small geographic area. Shawnee Indians
The Shawnee are an Algonquian-speaking indigenous people of the Northeastern Woodlands. In the 17th century they lived in Pennsylvania, and in the 18th century they were in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, with some bands in Kentucky and Alabama. By the 19th century, they were forcibly removed to Missouri, Kansas, Texas, and ultimately Indian Territory, which became Oklahoma under the 1830 Indian Removal Act. Today, Shawnee people are enrolled in three federally recognized tribes, all headquartered in Oklahoma: the Absentee-Shawnee Tribe of Indians, Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, and Shawnee Tribe. Etymology Shawnee has also been written as Shaawanwaki, Ša·wano·ki, Shaawanowi lenaweeki, and Shawano. Indian Creek (Mississippi River)
Indian Creek is a stream in Cape Girardeau County in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is a tributary of the Mississippi River.''Ware, IL,'' 7.5 Minute Topographic Quadrangle, USGS, 1947 (1990 rev.) The stream headwaters arise at approximately one-half mile south of Pocahontas just east of Missouri Route C at an elevation of approximately 590 feet. The stream flows southeast and then east passing under and then flowing parallel to Missouri Route 177 to its confluence with the Mississippi at at an elevation of 338 feet. The stream forms the northern boundary of the Trail of Tears State Park just prior to its confluence. Indian Creek took its name from the Shawnee Indians in the area. Pocahontas, Missouri
Pocahontas is a village in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 97 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Cape Girardeau–Jackson, MO- IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Name Tradition has that Samuel Green opened a post office and started the town, and was required by the government to provide a name for the town. Samuel Green had fallen in love with a princess of the Shawnee and Delaware tribes living along Apple Creek, but she had left the region along with the Shawnee and Delaware when they moved west. Green intended to name the town after this woman whom he longed for. Unfortunately, the name of this princess was difficult to pronounce and nearly as impossible to spell, so when registering the town’s name, Green instead decided to substitute his love’s name for the name of a historic Indian princess Pocahontas, of colonial Virginia fame.
