Shawnee Hills
The Shawnee Hills are a region within the larger Interior Low Plateaus physiographic province located in southern Illinois, southern Indiana, and western Kentucky. In Illinois it rests mainly in an east–west arc roughly following the outline of the southern end of the Illinois Basin. Whereas Mississippian and Pennsylvanian Age rock layers are deep beneath the soil surface in central Illinois, these strata pierce the surface in southern Illinois. The Shawnee Hills are surface expressions of the more weather-resistant limestone and sandstone layers. This formation is due in part to the last glaciation of the Ice Age (which tended to grind down hills and bury them under soil) not reaching this far south. Shawnee is the name used for a native American people, who historically resided in the Ohio Valley. Kinkaid Lake is a reservoir located in southwestern Illinois. Entirely within Jackson County, the lake is approximately northwest of Murphysboro and southeast of St. Louis. Big Muddy River
The Big Muddy River is a river in southern Illinois. It joins the Mississippi River just south of Grand Tower. The Big Muddy has been dammed near Benton, forming Rend Lake. Ware, Illinois
Ware is an unincorporated community in Union County, Illinois, and is located near Jonesboro. History The earliest inhabitants of the area around Ware were of Late Woodland and Mississippian cultures. A village with four mounds was occupied between around 800 and 1300 A.D. One of the four mounds was destroyed in the construction of Illinois Route 3. The Ware Mounds and Village Site is situated just west of Ware. In January 1839, thousands of Cherokee Indians being forcibly relocated from their lands in Georgia to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) passed through Ware. Grand Tower is a city in Jackson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 479 at the 2020 census. The town gets its name from Tower Rock, a landmark island in the Mississippi River.
