Shannon County is a county in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,031. Its county seat is Eminence. The county was officially organized on January 29, 1841, and was named in honor of George F. "Peg-Leg" Shannon, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It is the second-largest county by area in Missouri. Missouri's first copper mine was opened in Shannon County in 1846 and Missouri's only manganese mine was opened here during World War II. Shannon is an unincorporated community in Clay County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 23 in 2000. It is located within the Wichita Falls metropolitan area. History On May 22, 2020, an EFU tornado hit the community and traveled south to nearby Joy. Multiple storm chasers observed this tornado but no damage was found. A tornado also struck Shannon in April 1955, although there were no casualties. Geography Shannon is located on Farm to Market Road 175, southwest of Henrietta and north of Jacksboro in extreme south-central Clay County. Shannon is a town in Lee County, Mississippi. The population was 1,496 at the 2020 Census. Shannon is located on Mississippi Highway 145, west of U.S. Route 45. Chiwapa Creek flows south of the town. History The town is named for Samuel Shannon, who purchased land at that location from Chickasaw Chief Itawamba in the early 1800s, then built a cabin and a farm. More settlers arrived following the Treaty of Pontotoc, which ceding Chickasaw land in exchange for financial compensation. In the early 1800s, Constantine Shannon brought strawberry plants from Shannon to Plant City, Florida, enabling the creation of a multimillion-dollar industry in Plant City. Shannon is an unincorporated community in Mason County, Kentucky, United States. The village lies southwest of Maysville on U.S. Route 62, near the town of Sardis. The highest point in the community is dominated by the Shannon Methodist Church and a mound built by the prehistoric inhabitants of the region. The ovoid earthwork is 8 to 10 feet high and 100 feet in diameter. Historical graves in the mound have prevented archaeological investigation and more precise identification of the mound's builders.
