George Shanks
George Shanks (1896–1957) was an expatriate British people, Briton born in Moscow and was the first translator of ''The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, Protocols of Zion'' from Russian into English. He was also a founding member of Radio Normandy. __NOTOC__ George Shanks was the son of Henry Shanks, a well-known British merchant who resided in Moscow. Henry Shanks managed the family firm of Shanks & Bolin, Magasin Anglais established by his father James Steuart Shanks in 1852. As a result of the Russian Revolution of 1917, the family lost their business and home and were forced to return to London. It is believed that the translation was completed during this period in London. His identity was not discovered until 1978; initially, it was believed that Victor E. Nelson Shanks
John Nelson Shanks (December 23, 1937 – August 28, 2015) was an American artist and painter. His best known works include his portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales, first shown at Hirschl & Adler Gallery in New York City, April 24 to June 28, 1996, and the portrait of president Bill Clinton for the National Portrait Gallery. Shanks had been on the faculty of the Memphis Academy of Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Students League of New York, the National Academy of Design and Studio Incamminati and was a resident of Andalusia, Pennsylvania. Alison Shanks (born 13 December 1982) is a retired New Zealand professional racing cyclist, specialising in the individual pursuit and team pursuit in track cycling and individual time trial in road bicycle racing. Prior to that she was an Otago Rebels netballer, the sport she played for more than five years before her cycling career. Cycling career Shanks began cycling in 2005, and soon enjoyed success. After more than five years competing for the Otago Rebels in the National Bank Cup netball, she competed at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne where she finished fourth in the pursuit. She placed eighth in the pursuit during her first appearance at the World Championships in 2006, and improved on this to finish seventh in 2007. Katrina Shanks
Katrina May Shanks (born 12 May 1969) is a New Zealand chief executive and former politician. Shanks was a Member of Parliament for the National Party from 2007 to 2014. After leaving Parliament she returned to her business career and has been chief executive of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF) since January 2024. Early years Shanks was born in Dannevirke in 1969, and attended St Matthew's Collegiate for Girls in Masterton and Dannevirke High School. Rosalind Shanks is a British actress and broadcaster. In 1964, she joined the BBC's Radio Drama Company by winning the Carleton Hobbs Bursary. Shanks starred as Margaret Hale the heroine in ''North and South'', in 1975, opposite Patrick Stewart as John Thornton. In the same year, she appeared as Joanna Childe in "The Girls of Slender Means" by Muriel Spark, a land mark series with a leading female cast by pioneering female director Moira Armstrong. In the theatre Rosalind took leading roles including in repertory, at the National Theatre (during Lord Olivier's time in charge), in a world tour of "Shakespeare's People" with Sir Michael Redgrave, and in the West End with Judi Dench and Sian Phillips directed by Sir John Gielgud. Robert Gray Robin Shanks CBE (born 4 April 1934) is a British retired clinical pharmacologist, specialising in Beta adrenergic blocking drugs. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1997 New Year Honours, For Services to Medicine. Shanks was the first person to give a beta blocking drug (DCI, dichloroisoprenaline) to a person in 1961/62 to study its effects on cardiovascular responses to catecholamines and stress. Jointly with Sir James Black (Nobel Prize winner in 1988) he discovered the beta-blocking drug, propranolol, in 1962. In 1964 he classified beta adrenergic receptors in beta one and beta two and as a result developed the first drug ( practoLol) to selectively block beta one receptors. Subsequently he spent 30 years studying the properties and clinical pharmacology and clinical use of beta blocking and other cardiovascular drugs. Norman Shanks (born 15 July 1942) is an ordained Church of Scotland minister, who prior to his retirement in June 2007 was minister of Govan Old Parish Church, Glasgow. He is married to Ruth, and has a daughter and two sons, and seven grandchildren. Niall Shanks (18 January 1959 13 July 2011) was an English philosopher and critic of intelligent design. Career Shanks was born in Cheshire, England, was educated at Rossall School, and later at the University of Leeds and the University of Liverpool. Shanks left England for Canada in 1981 and earned his PhD at the University of Alberta, Canada in 1987. Shanks moved to the United States in 1987. Shanks was the vocalist for the earliest but short-lived lineup of the all-woman band Vixen after changing its name from Genesis (formerly Lemon Pepper), initially playing pop rock.
