Shamus Culhane
James H. "Shamus" Culhane (November 12, 1908 – February 2, 1996) was an American animator, film director, and film producer. He is best known for his work in the Golden age of American animation. Career Shamus Culhane worked for a number of American animation studios, including Fleischer Studios, the Ub Iwerks studio, Walt Disney Productions, and Walter Lantz Productions. He began his animation career in 1925 working for Bray Productions on the Dinky Doodle series, produced under the supervision of Walter Lantz. After Bray he served as an inker on Ben Harrison’s and Manny Gould’s Krazy Kat cartoons before moving to Fleischer Studios in 1929 after producer Charles Mintz did not retain him upon transferring the studio to Hollywood. Manny Gould
Emanuel Gould (May 30, 1904 – July 19, 1975) was an American animated cartoonist from the 1920s to the 1970s, best known for his contributions as a director, writer and animator for Screen Gems, and solely an animator for Warner Bros. Cartoons and DePatie–Freleng Enterprises. Career Manny Gould's career as an animator began his career as a teenager working for several New York-based animation studios, such as the Barre-Bowers Studio, the Jefferson Film Corperation, and Inkwell Studios. After being accused by the Fleischer's for infringement, he would leave and later partner with Ben Harrison, Burt Gillett and Dick Huemer to form the short-lived Associated Animators Studio in 1925. Burton F. Gillett (October 15, 1891 – December 28, 1971) was a Film director, director of animation, animated films. He is noted for his Silly Symphonies work for Walt Disney Pictures, Disney, particularly the 1932 short film ''Flowers and Trees'' and the 1933 short film ''Three Little Pigs (film), Three Little Pigs'', both of which were awarded the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film and both of which were selected for inclusion in the National Film Registry. Van Beuren Corporation
The Van Beuren Corporation was a New York City-based animation studio that produced theatrical cartoons as well as live-action short-subjects from the 1920s to 1936. History In 1920, the Keith-Albee organization formed Fables Pictures for the production of the Aesop's Film Fables cartoon series with Paul Terry, who himself owned 10 percent of the studio. Producer Amedee J. Van Beuren bought out the studio in 1928, retaining Terry and renaming the business after its new owner. Van Beuren released Terry's first sound cartoon '' Dinner Time'' (1928) (a month before Disney's ''Steamboat Willie'') through Pathé Exchange, which later became part of RKO Pictures. ''ComiColor Cartoons'' is a series of twenty-five animated short subjects produced by Ub Iwerks from 1933 to 1936. The series was the last produced by Iwerks Studio; after losing distributor Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1934, the Iwerks studio's senior company Celebrity Pictures (run by Pat Powers) had to distribute the films itself. The series was shot exclusively in Cinecolor. Most of the ComiColor entries were based upon popular fairy tales and other familiar stories, including ''Jack and the Beanstalk'', ''Old Mother Hubbard'', '' The Bremen Town Musicians'', and '' The Headless Horseman''. Iwerks Studio
Iwerks Studio was an animation studio based in Beverly Hills, California, headed by animator Ub Iwerks, in operation between 1930 and 1936. Financing Iwerks was working at Walt Disney Animation Studios when he accepted a contract with Disney's former distributor, Pat Powers, to leave Disney and start an animation studio under his own name. The Iwerks Studio opened in 1930. Financial backers led by Pat Powers suspected that Iwerks was responsible for much of Disney's early success. Newly hired animator Fred Kopietz recommended that Iwerks employ a friend from Chouinard Art School, Chuck Jones, who was hired and put to work as a cel washer. Despite a contract with MGM to distribute the cartoons, the Iwerks Studio was never a major commercial success and failed to rival either the Disney Studio or Fleischer Studios.
