Smyth County is a county located in the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 29,800. Its county seat is Marion. History Smyth County was formed on February 23, 1832, from Washington and Wythe counties. The county is named after Alexander Smyth, a general during the War of 1812 who was elected to the state Senate, House of Delegates, and as a Representative to the United States Congress. Marion, Virginia
Marion is a town in and the county seat of Smyth County, Virginia, United States. It is positioned upon Interstate 81, in the Blue Ridge portion of the southern Appalachian Mountains in Southwest Virginia. The town is named for American Revolutionary War officer Francis Marion. Within the town limits it had a population of approximately 6,000, per 2020 Census counts. However, together with the neighborhoods, an additional 9,000 residents residing in unincorporated Smyth County have Marion mailing addresses, granting the Marion ZIP code (24354) a total population of about 14,500, which is approximately half of the county's total population. Chilhowie, Virginia
Chilhowie is a town in Smyth County, Virginia, United States, on the Middle Fork of the Holston River. The population was 1,781 at the 2010 census. The name Chilhowie is said to come from a Cherokee word meaning "valley of many deer". It is also notable for having only one traffic light in the entire city. I-81 runs through Chilhowie. It is located at exit 35. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.6 square miles (6.7 km), all land. History Chilhowie was often the starting point of longhunter expeditions in the 1700s. In 1748 the area was visited by Colonel James Patton and Dr. Thomas Walker. They constructed a small fort, likely just a blockhouse. An early settler was Samuel Stalnaker (1715-1769) who converted Patton's fort into a tavern known as the Town House, and lived there until the late 1760s. Aspenvale Cemetery
Aspenvale Cemetery is a historic cemetery located at Seven Mile Ford, Smyth County, Virginia. The cemetery consists of three sections, with the most prominent marked by a T-shaped limestone wall and containing the graves of the Preston and Campbell families. It includes the grave of Revolutionary War General William Campbell (c. 1745–1781) and his wife Elizabeth Henry Campbell Russell (1749–1825), sister of Patrick Henry. William Campbell's remains were originally placed in a marble table tomb erected by his son-in-law, General Francis Preston (1765–1835) in 1823.
