Settlement Village
A settlement village () is a settlement in the Faroe Islands that was founded during the 1800s or early 1900s. The population of the islands grew quickly from 1800 onward, resulting in a shortage of land in the older villages. Many new villages were established on the periphery of the older ones, and therefore few of the new villages contained state-owned leasehold land (). Starting in the late 1800s, the Faroes developed from an agricultural society with coastal fishing as secondary occupation to a fairly uniform fishing-based economy with a large land-based fish-processing industry. Industrialization led to significant centralization of the population, so that some of the new farming villages were depopulated quickly. Nesvík is a village on the east coast of the Faroese island of Streymoy, located in the Sunda municipality. The population has been 0 since 2016, when the last inhabitants left. Nesvík is home to a religious camp of the conservative Inner Mission of the national church, and a conference center called Leguhusið í Nesvík. Its name is derived from the Faroese words for ''cape'' and ''bay''. Víkar, Faroe Islands
Víkar (pronounced ) is an abandoned village in the Faroe Islands on the north coast of the island of Vágar. The name ''Víkar'' means ''coves'' in Faroese, a name with a similar meaning to that of the island of Vágar itself. History Víkar was founded in 1833 and belonged to the village of Gásadalur farther south. Even today a path still connects the two communities with each other. Even though the landscape was very favourable, Víkar had already been abandoned by 1910, because it was too difficult to reach. Tvøroyri
Tvøroyri is a village on the north side of the Trongisvágsfjørður on the east coast of Suðuroy island in the Faroe Islands. Together with Froðba, Trongisvágur, Líðin and Øravík it forms Tvøroyri Municipality. The village is considered to have been founded in 1836, when the Danish Royal Trade Monopoly in the Faroe Islands, Royal Danish Monopoly Trade Store was founded on a small tongue of land, called Tvøroyri. In a short span of years, Tvøroyri grew into a large village, mainly after 1856 when the monopoly state of the store was abolished. Around the turn of the 20th century, Tvøroyri was one of the largest towns on the Faroe Islands and had one of the main fishing industries. Syðradalur
Syðradalur (, is a village on the island of Kalsoy, one of the Faroe Islands. Syðradalur is the southernmost village on the island, and is in Húsar Municipality. On 1 January 2009, Syðradalur had nine inhabitants, down from 12 in 1985. Bjørn Kalsø comes from Syðradalur. History Syðradalur is a settlement village () founded at the beginning of the 19th century by inhabitants of the village of Blankskáli on the south-west of the island. Syðradalur was previously inhabited in the 17th century, but the reason it was abandoned is unknown. In 1855, a boat from the village was sunk on a large boulder. In 1963, another boat from the village, this time carrying three men, was also sunk. A tunnel system was built in 1985 linking Syðradalur with the other villages on the island. Slættanes
Slættanes (pronounced ) is a village on the island of Vágar in the western Faroes, which is now abandoned and only used as summer homes. Slættanes, like the also-abandoned village of Víkar, Faroe Islands, Víkar, is on the northern coast of the island. It was founded in 1835 by a man named Hendrik Thomasen and belonged to the municipality of Sandavágur in the south. During its best years (1945 to 1950) around 130 people lived in the village, but the average population was around 70. There were 12 houses in Slættanes. However, in 1965 the last inhabitants left the community because of its relatively isolated location. A road was never built to Slættanes, but there are many trails there. One goes to Sandavágur in the southeast, another to Sørvágur to the south, and yet another goes west to Gásadalur. In the village itself there are no streets or discernible paths. Skopun
Skopun (pronounced ; ) is a town in the Faroe Islands situated on the northern coast of Sandoy. Skopun is the second-largest town on the island. Skopun Municipality consists only of the town of Skopun. History Although the area has been inhabited since the Middle Ages, Skopun was not founded until 1833. The people of Skopun did not possess any land. They subsisted on fishing, so the houses were built close to the water. In 1897, Skopun's church was constructed out of timber taken from the old church of Vestmanna. The Faroe Islands' first road was built on Sandoy in 1917, as part of a government-financed plan to improve the island's non-existent harbour facilities. It connects Skopun with Sandur, the island's main town. Skopun's harbour was built in 1926 and later extended. In 1982, the harbour was furnished with a gate which protects the dock from the sea. Skipanes
Skipanes () is a hamlet on the Faeroese island of Eysturoy in Runavík Municipality. Founded in 1841, the population as of August 2022 was 55 people. In amalgamation with undir Gøtueiði in Eysturkommuna, it forms a tiny conurbation; a small creek acts as a border between the two settlements. Notable residents of Skipanes include Terji Skibenæs, the guitarist of the Faeroese Viking Metal group Týr (band). Its postal code is FO-665. Rituvík () is a village on the southeast side of the Faroese island of Eysturoy located in the municipality of Runavíkar. History Founded in 1873, its current church was built in 1955. Oyrarbakki is a village on the west coast of the Faroese island of Eysturoy in the Sunda municipality, between Norðskáli and Oyri. In 2005 the population was 97, which grew to 163 as of 2023 Its postal code is FO 400. The nearby 226-metre Streymin Bridge across to the island of Streymoy to the west opened in 1976. Oyrarbakki now has a large school, shops and a modern post office building.
