Sestriere (, , , ) is a ski resort in Piedmont, Italy, a ''comune'' (municipality) of the Metropolitan City of Turin. It is situated in Val Susa, from the France, French border. Its name derives from Latin language, Latin: ''ad petram sistrariam'', that is at sixty Roman mile, Roman miles from Turin. Geography Sestriere has 929 inhabitants as of 1 January 2021 and is located on the pass that links Val Chisone and Val Susa, at above mean sea level. The village is completely surrounded by mountains, which have been exploited to build one of the biggest ski resorts in Italy. The main mountains around Sestriere are: Monte Fraiteve in the north-east, Monte Sises , Punta Rognosa di Sestriere and Monte Motta in the south-east. Val Chisone
The Val Chisone is one of the Occitan valleys of western Piedmont, situated in the Cottian Alps in the Metropolitan City of Turin in north-west Italy. Geography Traditionally, the valley's entrances are considered the towns of Pinerolo and Sestriere. It is bounded by the Val di Susa (to which it is connected by the Sestriere Pass, at ) to the north and east, the Val Sangone to the north, the Val Pellice to the south, while eastwards is the plain of the Po Valley. The valley is crossed by the torrent from which it takes its name, the Chisone. 2006 Winter Olympic Games
The 2006 Winter Olympics (), officially the XX Olympic Winter Games () and also known as Torino 2006, were a winter multi-sport event held from 10 to 26 February in Turin, Italy. This marked the second time Italy had hosted the Winter Olympics, the first being in 1956 in Cortina d'Ampezzo; Italy had also hosted the Summer Olympics in 1960 in Rome. Turin was selected as the host city for the 2006 Games in June 1999. The official motto of Torino 2006 was "Passion lives here". The Games' logo depicted a stylized profile of the Mole Antonelliana building, drawn in white and blue ice crystals, signifying the snow and the sky. 2011 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships
The 2011 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships was held in Sestriere, Italy, from January 14 to 23, 2011. IPC stands for International Paralympic Committee. Skiers competed in sitting, standing or visually impaired classification categories in Downhill, giant slalom, Slalom, Super-G, Super Combined and Team events. Over 130 skiers competed, including German multiple-Paralympic medalist Gerd Schönfelder, who competed in classification-category standing events. Sestriere hosted the Paralympic alpine skiing competition, at the 2006 Winter Paralympics. The internet-TV channel ParalympicSport.TV, owned by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) broadcast daily live coverage of the Championships, from January 18–23, also available after the Championships as Video on Demand (VOD). Via Lattea
The Via Lattea (italian (language), italian for ''Milky Way'') is a winter sports area in the Italian and French Alps, straddling the French-Italian border at Claviere/Montgenèvre. Located some 70 km (44 miles) west of Turin, it comprises the five Piedmontese resorts of Claviere (1760m), Sansicario Torinese, Sansicario (1700m), Sauze d'Oulx (1509m), Pragelato (1524m) and Sestriere (2035m) and additionally the French resort Montgenèvre (1860m). Altogether there are more than 400 km (250 miles) of skiable pistes, 120 of them with artificial snow, and 70 lifts. The lowest lift begins at 1370m in the service village of Cesana Torinese; the highest point is Mont Motta in the Sestriere ski area, at 2800m. The FIS Alpine Ski World Cup is the top international circuit of alpine skiing competitions, launched in 1966 by a group of ski racing friends and experts which included French journalist Serge Lang (skiing), Serge Lang and the alpine ski team directors from France (Honore Bonnet) and the United States Ski Team, USA (Bob Beattie (skiing), Bob Beattie).
