Serbia and Sweden maintain diplomatic relations established in 1917. From 1918 to 2006, Sweden maintained relations with the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY), and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) (later Serbia and Montenegro), of which Serbia is considered shared (SFRY) or sole (FRY) legal successor. Economic relations Trade between two countries amounted to $749 million in 2023; Serbia's merchandise export to Sweden were about $460 million; Swedish exports were standing at roughly $289 million. Swedish companies present in Serbia include Tetra Pak (food packaging and processing plant in Gornji Milanovac), Trelleborg (non-tire rubber producing factory in Ruma). In retail sector there are IKEA (with store on the outskirts of Belgrade) and H&M (as one of the biggest fashion retailers in the country). Gornji Milanovac
Gornji Milanovac ( sr-Cyrl, Гoрњи Милановац, ) is a town and municipality located in the Moravica District of central Serbia. The population of the town is 23,109, while the population of the municipality is 38,985 (2022 census data). The town was founded in 1853. Before 1859 the original name of the town was Despotovica ( sr-Cyrl, Деспотовица), after the Despotovica river passing by the town. In 1859 the name was changed to Gornji Milanovac at the request of the Prince of Serbia Miloš Obrenović. The foreign policy of Sweden was formerly based on the premise that national security is best served by staying free of alliances in peacetime in order to remain a neutral country in the event of war, with this policy lasting from 1814 in the context of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars until the 2022 Russian Invasion of Ukraine. In 2002, Sweden revised its security doctrine.
