''Terebellum terebellum'', common name the Terebellum conch, is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Seraphsidae, the true conchs. Description ''T. terebellum'' is a very active animal that can quickly bury itself in sand or swim away from danger. It uses its foot like a propeller to swim. Its shell is thin and fragile. Distribution ''T. terebellum'' are found throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Phylogeny The phylogenetic relationships among the Stromboidea have been accessed in 2005, by Simone. He proposed a cladogram (a tree of descent) based on an extensive morpho-anatomical analysis of representatives of Aporrhaidae, Strombidae, Xenophoridae and Struthiolariidae. In his analysis, Simone recognized Strombidae as a monophyletic taxon supported by 13 synapomorphies (traits that are shared by two or more taxa and their most recent common ancestor), with at least eight distinct genera. IRMNG
The Interim Register of Marine and Nonmarine Genera (IRMNG) is a taxonomic database which attempts to cover published genus names for all domains of life (also including subgenera in zoology), from 1758 in zoology (1753 in botany) up to the present, arranged in a single, internally consistent taxonomic hierarchy, for the benefit of Biodiversity Informatics initiatives plus general users of biodiversity (taxonomic) information. In addition to containing over 500,000 published genus name instances as at July 2024 (also including subgeneric names in zoology), the database holds over 1.7 million species names (1.3 million listed as "accepted"), although this component of the data is not maintained in as current or complete state as the genus-level holdings. Pierre Denys de Montfort, also spelt Pierre Dénys de Montfort, (1766–1820) was a French Natural history, naturalist, in particular a malacologist, remembered today for his pioneering inquiries into the existence of the gigantic octopuses. He was inspired by a description from 1783 of an eight-metre long tentacle found in the mouth of a sperm whale.
