''Semyon Chelyuskin'' ( rus, Семён Челюскин) was a Soviet Union, Soviet icebreaker in service from 1965 until at least 1988. It was one of twelve Project 97 icebreaker, Project 97A icebreakers built by Admiralty Shipyard in Leningrad in 1961–1971. Description In the mid-1950s, the Soviet Union began developing a new diesel-electric icebreaker design based on the 1942-built steam-powered icebreaker Eisbär (1941 icebreaker), ''Eisbär'' to meet the needs of both civilian and naval operators. Built in various configurations until the early 1980s, the Project 97 icebreakers and their derivatives became the largest and longest-running class of icebreakers and icebreaking vessels built in the world. Semyon Chelyuskin
Semyon Ivanovich Chelyuskin (; Wiktionary:circa, c. 1700 – 1764) was a Russian polar region, polar explorer and naval officer. Chelyuskin graduated from the Moscow School of Mathematics and Navigation, Navigation School in Moscow. He first became a Subordinate#Social hierarchies, deputy navigator while serving in the Baltic Fleet (1726) and later promoted to navigator (1733). Chelyuskin was chosen for the Second Kamchatka Expedition, Second (Great Northern) Kamchatka Expedition, in which he took part until 1743. He participated in expeditions, led by Vasily Pronchischev and Khariton Laptev. In spring of 1741, Chelyuskin made a voyage from the Khatanga River to the Pyasina River by land. He described the western coastline from the Taimyr Peninsula to the Middendorff Bay and then from the mouth of Pyasina to the mouth of the Yenisei River. Laying the keel or laying down is the formal recognition of the start of a ship's construction. The diesel engine, named after Rudolf Diesel, is an internal combustion engine in which ignition of the fuel is caused by the elevated temperature of the air in the cylinder due to mechanical compression; thus, the diesel engine is a so-called compression-ignition engine (CI engine).
