Selma Gürkan
Selma Gürkan (1961) is a Turkish unionist and politician. In 2015 Gürkan made a joint statement with Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) leaders Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ addressing the perceived threats to political freedom in advance of the November elections, in which they called for a commitment to democratic rights. In February 2018 Gürkan made a speech criticising Turkey's invasion of Afrin, Syria Afrin (; ) is a Kurdish majority city in northern Syria. In the Afrin District, it is part of the Aleppo Governorate. The total population of the district was recorded at 172,095 people, of whom 70,000 lived in the town of Afrin itself. Labour Party (Turkey)
The Labour Party (in Turkish: ''Emek Partisi'', EMEP) is a communist party in Turkey. Its chairperson is Seyit Aslan. The party was founded as ''Emek Partisi'' (Labour Party, EP) in 1996. Due to its ban by the Constitutional Court, it was refounded with the name ''Emeğin Partisi'' (Party of Labour, EMEP), the same year. In 2005, the name "Emek Partisi" was reinstalled after the European Court of Human Rights held the ban was a violation of Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Abdullah Levent Tüzel
Abdullah Levent Tüzel (born 12 July 1961) is a Turkish politician who was one of the founders of the Labour Party (EMEP) in 1996. He was a Member of Parliament for Istanbul's third electoral district, had been elected as an Independent in the 2011 general election with the backing of the Labour, Democracy and Freedom Bloc. He was with the parliamentary group of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). Tüzel graduated from Istanbul University Law school and has been a freelance lawyer since 1985. Founding the Labour Party in 1996, he managed resigned before the 2011 general election in order to contest the election as an independent from Istanbul. Selahattin Demirtaş
Selahattin Demirtaş (born 10 April 1973) is a Kurdish politician, lawyer and author. He was the co-leader of the left-wing pro- Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), serving alongside Figen Yüksekdağ from 2014 to 2018. Selahattin Demirtaş announced that he left politics after the May 2023 elections. Demirtaş was the presidential candidate of the HDP in the 2014 presidential election, coming in third place. He led the HDP to gather 13.1% at the June 2015 parliament elections and 10.7% in the snap elections in November 2015, coming 4th in each election. Figen Yüksekdağ
Figen Yüksekdağ Şenoğlu (born 19 December 1971) is a Turkish politician and journalist, who was a former co-leader of the left-wing Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) of Turkey from 2014 to 2017, serving alongside Selahattin Demirtaş. She was a Member of Parliament for Van since the June 2015 general election until her parliamentary membership was revoked by the courts on 21 February 2017. Her party membership and therefore her co-leadership position were revoked by the courts on 9 March 2017 following a six-year prison sentence for distributing "terrorist propaganda". Afrin, Syria
Afrin (; ) is a Kurdish majority city in northern Syria. In the Afrin District, it is part of the Aleppo Governorate. The total population of the district was recorded at 172,095 people, of whom 70,000 lived in the town of Afrin itself. The town and district are named after the Afrin River. The city is split into two distinct halves by the river.
