Self-Portrait (Bol)
''Self-Portrait'' is an oil-on-canvas painting executed c. 1669 by the Dutch painter Ferdinand Bol. It is held in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Showing the artist in an embroidered robe leaning on a small sculpture of Cupid, it is thought to have been painted on the occasion of his second marriage to Anna van Erckel in 1669. It is probably the self-portrait mentioned in the probate records relating to the artist's unmarried son Elbert, though it is unknown to whom it was bequeathed. It was sold as lot number 9 at a Weduwe C. Roos auction of the collection owned by a man named Wreesman on 17 August 1818. It was bought by Albertus Brondgeest, who left it to its current owner in 1849. Ferdinand Bol
Ferdinand Bol (24 June 1616 - 24 August 1680) was a Dutch painter, etcher and draftsman. Although his surviving work is rare, it displays Rembrandt's influence; like his master, Bol favored historical subjects, portraits, numerous self-portraits, and single figures in exotic finery. Biography Ferdinand was born in Dordrecht as the son of a surgeon, Balthasar Bol. Ferdinand Bol was first an apprentice of Jacob Cuyp in his hometown and/or of Abraham Bloemaert in Utrecht. After 1630, he studied with Rembrandt, living in his house in Sint Antoniesbreestraat, then a fashionable street and area for painters, jewellers, architects, and many Flemish and Jewish immigrants. In 1641, Bol started his own studio. In 1652, he became a burgher of Amsterdam, and in 1653, he married Elisabeth Dell, whose father held positions with the Admiralty of Amsterdam and the wine merchants' guild, both institutions that later gave commissions to the artist. Oil painting is a painting method involving the procedure of painting with pigments combined with a drying oil as the binder. The Rijksmuseum () is the national museum of the Netherlands dedicated to Dutch arts and history and is located in Amsterdam. In classical mythology, Cupid ( , meaning "passionate desire") is the god of desire, erotic love, attraction and affection.
