Sedan, South Australia
Sedan is a rural town in South Australia. It is located about 100 kilometres east of Adelaide and about 20 kilometres west of the Murray River. It is located on the dry eastern side of the Mount Lofty Ranges. Overview Sedan used to be the terminus of the South Australian Railways' Sedan line, which opened on 13 October 1919, and was curtailed to Cambrai in 1964. Sedan is at the junction of the Stott Highway which connects the Barossa Valley on the west to the River Murray and Riverland on the east, and Halfway House Road which provides a north-south heavy vehicle route between the Sturt Highway and Princes Highway on the plains to the east of the Mount Lofty Ranges. Surrounded by dry-stone walls built by early settlers, the historic town of Sedan is home to many 19th century buildings that are in excellent condition. Battle Of Sedan
The Battle of Sedan was fought during the Franco-Prussian War from 1 to 2 September 1870. Resulting in the capture of Emperor Napoleon III and over a hundred thousand troops, it effectively decided the war in favour of Prussia and its allies, though fighting continued under a new French government. The 130,000 strong French '' Army of Châlons'', commanded by Marshal Patrice de MacMahon and accompanied by Napoleon III, was attempting to lift the siege of Metz, only to be caught by the Prussian Fourth Army and defeated at the Battle of Beaumont on 30 August. Princes Highway
Princes Highway is a major road in Australia, extending from Sydney via Melbourne to Adelaide through the states of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. It has a length of (along Highway 1) or via the former alignments of the highway, although these routes are slower and connections to the bypassed sections of the original route are poor in many cases. The highway follows the coastline for most of its length, and thus takes quite an indirect and lengthy route. For example, it is from Sydney to Melbourne on Highway 1 as opposed to on the more direct Hume Highway ( National Highway 31), and from Melbourne to Adelaide compared to on the Western and Dukes Highways ( National Highway 8). Riverland
The Riverland is a region of South Australia. It covers an area of along the River Murray from where it flows into South Australia from New South Wales and Victoria downstream to Blanchetown. The major town centres are Renmark, Berri, Loxton, Waikerie, Barmera and Monash, and many minor townships. The population is approximately 35,000 people.
