Seaford Railway Station, Melbourne
Seaford railway station is a commuter railway station on the Frankston line, which is part of the Melbourne railway network. It serves the south-eastern suburb of Seaford, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Seaford station is a ground-level unstaffed station, featuring two side platforms. It opened on 1 December 1913, with the current station provided in 1979. A substation is located at the northern ( up) end of the station. History Like the suburb itself, Seaford station is named after the English town of Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The name was suggested by local councillor Sydney Plowman, who was originally from Sleaford. On 13 November 1957, an electric locomotive shunting in the yard derailed, blocking both lines for almost two hours. Just before 18:00 on 5 June 1968, Tait trailer carriages 336T and 307T were damaged by fire while stabled near the station. Public Transport Victoria (PTV) is the brand name for public transport in the Australian state of Victoria. It was previously the trading name of the Public Transport Development Authority (PTDA), a now-defunct statutory authority in Victoria, responsible for providing, coordinating, and promoting public transport. Australian Railway Historical Society
The Australian Railway Historical Society (ARHS) has been a railway organisation concerned with history and preservation of railway heritage at a national level. It has had divisions in every state and the Australian Capital Territory, although the ACT division was wound up in 2016, along with the Victorian division in 2020. Since 1967, when each division incorporated, the state divisions operated as separate entities. Each still trades under the ARHS brand, except in Western Australia, where the division is called Rail Heritage WA. Individual membership exceeds 2,500. Shunting, in railway operations, is the process of sorting items of rolling stock into complete trains, or the reverse. In the United States this activity is known as switching. Motive power Motive power is normally provided by a locomotive known as a ''shunter locomotive'' (in the UK) or switcher locomotive (in the US). Most shunter/switchers are now diesel-powered but steam and even electric locomotives have been used. Where locomotives could not be used (e.g. because of weight restrictions) shunting operations have in the past been effected by horses or capstans. The City of Frankston (known before 1966 as the Shire of Frankston) was a local government area about south of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia.
