Ellen Browning Scripps
Ellen Browning Scripps (October 18, 1836 – August 3, 1932) was an American journalist and philanthropist who was the founding donor of several major institutions in Southern California. She and her half-brother E. W. Scripps, E.W. Scripps created the E. W. Scripps Company, E.W. Scripps Company, America's largest chain of newspapers, linking Midwestern industrial cities with booming towns in the West. By the 1920s, Ellen Browning Scripps was worth an estimated $30 million (or $3 billion in 2024 dollars), most of which she gave away. She appeared on the cover of ''Time (magazine), Time'' magazine after founding Scripps College in Claremont, California. She also donated millions of dollars to organizations worldwide that promised to advance democratic principles and women's education. Scripps Health is a nonprofit health care system based in San Diego, California. The system includes five hospital campuses and 30 outpatient centers and clinics, and treats more than 600,000 patients annually through 3,000 affiliated physicians. The system also includes clinical research and medical education programs. Scripps College
Scripps College is a private liberal arts women's college in Claremont, California. It was founded as a member of the Claremont Colleges in 1926, a year after the consortium's formation. Scripps Mansion
The Scripps Mansion (originally called Moulton Manor) is a Norman/Tudor Revival style mansion located in Orion Township, Michigan. The buildings and surrounding land are known collectively as the William E. Scripps Estate. Since 1956, the property has been part of the campus of Guest House, a residential treatment center for Catholic clergy. The estate was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. History The mansion was built in 1927 for William Edmund Scripps and his family. Scripps, the founder of the WWJ radio station (and son of the founder of the ''Detroit News''), had initially established a farm on the property as a "hobby", before eventually settling there. Scripps Heights () are rugged heights which are largely ice-covered, surmounting the peninsula between Casey Glacier and Lurabee Glacier on the east coast of Palmer Land, Antarctica. Deeply scarred by glaciers, the heights terminate on the east in Cape Walcott. Location Scripps Heights are near the Wilkins Coast of northeastern Palmer Land, beside the Weddell Sea to the east. They are southwest of Casey Inlet and northwest of Stefansson Strait. They are northeast of the Eternity Range, east of Wakefield Highland and southeast of Hitchcock Heights. The Lurabee Glacier flows east-northeast along the southeast margin of Scripps Heights to enter the sea south of Casey Inlet. Scripps Coastal Reserve
Scripps Coastal Reserve is a 126-acre (51 hectare) University of California Natural Reserve System reserve located west of UC San Diego in the La Jolla Farms area of La Jolla, California. Administered by UC San Diego, the site is owned by the University of California and managed for teaching and research. The reserve includes an 80-acre underwater and shoreline reserve and a 46-acre aboveground knoll. The underwater reserve comprises coastal areas that are now part of the San Diego-Scripps Coastal Marine Conservation Area. Scripps Canyon
Scripps Canyon is a narrow submarine canyon in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Southern California, United States. The canyon is approximately long and joins La Jolla Canyon offshore. Scripps Canyon is a popular site for scientific and recreational diving due to its vertical walls and high density of marine life. Scripps-Booth was a United States automobile marque based in Detroit, Michigan. Established by James Scripps Booth in 1913, Scripps-Booth Company produced motor vehicles and was later acquired by General Motors, becoming a division of it, until the brand was discontinued in 1923. Scripps Research is a nonprofit American medical research facility that focuses on research and education in the biomedical sciences. Headquartered in San Diego, California, the institute has over 170 laboratories employing 2,100 scientists, technicians, graduate students, and administrative and other staff.
