Schouwburgplein (Rotterdam)
Theatre Square (or in Dutch : Schouwburgplein) is a plaza situated in the heart of the city of Rotterdam, and is flanked by the municipal theatre, concert hall, restaurants, and cafes. An urban stage and an interactive open space, the 12.250 square meter square is designed by West 8, the landscape architecture firm founded by Adriaan Geuze. The design emphasizes the importance of a void, which opens a panorama towards the city skyline. It opened to the public in 1996. History Before World War II the area was a densely populated neighbourhood. In the 1960s the square was constructed including underground parking and the De Doelen concert hall. West 8
West 8 is an urban planning and landscape architecture firm founded by Adriaan Geuze and Paul van Beek in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 1987. It is known for its contemporary designs and innovative solutions to urban planning problems using lighting, metal structures, and color. Van Beek is no longer part of the firm. Geuze founded West 8 in 1987 in Rotterdam with Paul van Beek, who later left the firm. De Doelen
De Doelen is a concert venue and convention centre in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It was originally built in 1934 but then destroyed in 1940 during the German bombardment of Rotterdam in May 1940 at the outset of World War II. It was rebuilt in 1966, originally with one hall to which two more were added in the 1990s. It has a variety of facilities, including the Grote Zaal (Grand Hall), a 2,200-seat concert hall, two smaller halls which each seat about 700 people, and convention rooms. In 2015 it was classified as a Rijksmonument.
