Structuralism (architecture)
Structuralism is a movement in architecture and urban planning that evolved around the middle of the 20th century. It was a reaction to Rationalism'sAldo van Eyck, "Statement Against Rationalism", written for CIAM VI in 1947. In: ''Aldo van Eyck - Writings'', Amsterdam 2008. Statement against CIAM-formulations like: ''"Urban planning can never be determined by aesthetic considerations but exclusively by functional conclusions."'' This formulation came from architects of the Rationalist movement, written for the CIAM-declaration in 1928. ( CIAM-Functionalism) perceived lifeless expression of urban planning that ignored the identity of the inhabitants and urban forms. Herman Hertzberger
Herman Hertzberger (born 6 July 1932) is a Dutch architect, and a professor emeritus of the Delft University of Technology. In 2012 he received the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Biography Herman Hertzberger was born on 6 July 1932 in Amsterdam. He completed his studies at the Delft University of Technology in 1958, where he was a professor from 1970 to 1999. From 1959 to 1963 he is a part of the infamous FORUM editorial, together with Aldo van Eyck and Jaap Bakema. They stir up the architectural discussion at the time, especially concerning the reconstruction of dwellings after the Second World War. Career Hertzberger and Aldo van Eyck influenced the development of the Dutch Structuralist movement of the 1960s and 1970s. MVRDV
MVRDV is a Rotterdam, Netherlands-based architecture and urban design practice founded in 1993. The name is an acronym for the founding members: Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs, and Nathalie de Vries. History Maas and Van Rijs worked at OMA, De Vries at Mecanoo before starting MVRDV. The trio studied architecture together at the Delft University of Technology, Netherlands and won the "Europan 2" competition with their project "Berlinvoids" in 1991 before founding MVRDV two years later. The firm's first commission was the new offices for the public broadcasting corporation VPRO in Hilversum, the Netherlands (1993–1997). West 8
West 8 is an urban planning and landscape architecture firm founded by Adriaan Geuze and Paul van Beek in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 1987. It is known for its contemporary designs and innovative solutions to urban planning problems using lighting, metal structures, and color. Van Beek is no longer part of the firm. Geuze founded West 8 in 1987 in Rotterdam with Paul van Beek, who later left the firm.
