In the top left, the ruins of Cagliatscha Castle The Schams () is a section of the Hinterrhein (river), Hinterrhein valley in the Switzerland, Swiss canton of Graubünden. Geography The Schams is the central of the three valleys along the Hinterrhein (river), Hinterrhein. It is separated from the Rheinwald valley upstreams by the Rofla Gorge, and downstreams by the Viamala gorge from the Domleschg (valley), Domleschg/Heinzenberg GR, Heinzenberg valley. The Posterior Rhine flows through the valley in a predominantly south-to-north direction and falls from a height of 1094 m at the outflow of Rofla Gorge, where the Val Ferrera flows in from the right, to 883 m at the ''Raniabrücke''. The Schams valley is bordered on both sides by mountain ranges of around 3000 m high. The Kreis Schams forms, together with the sub-districts of Avers (Kreis), Avers, Domleschg (Kreis), Domleschg, Rheinwald (Kreis), Rheinwald and Thusis (Kreis), Thusis, the ("district") Hinterrhein (district), Hinterrhein of the Canton Graubünden in Switzerland. Three Leagues
The Three Leagues, sometimes referred to as Raetia, was the 1471 alliance between the League of God's House, the League of the Ten Jurisdictions, and the Grey League. Its members were all Swiss Associates, associates of the Old Swiss Confederacy, and as such enjoyed positive relations with the Confederation, which eventually led to the formation of the Swiss canton of Grisons. Andeer () is a municipalities of Switzerland, municipality in the Viamala Region in the Cantons of Switzerland, Swiss canton of Graubünden. Hinterrhein (river)
The Hinterrhein (; ; ; ; ; ), or Posterior Rhine, is the right of the two initial tributaries of the Rhine (the other being the '' Vorderrhein''). It is located in the canton of Grisons (), Switzerland. One of its upper tributaries is , which is the outflow of Lago di Lei located in Lombardy, Italy. Although it is shorter in length, its volume is larger than that of the ''Vorderrhein'' at their confluence near Reichenau, after which the river is called the Alpine Rhine, which flows out into Lake Constance (). Course Flowing from the village Hinterrhein near the San Bernardino Pass through the Rheinwald valley, the river flows into a gorge called Rofla Gorge (). Zillis-Reischen
Zillis-Reischen () is a municipality in the Viamala Region in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. History Zillis-Reischen was created in 1875 with the union of the previously independent municipalities of Reischen and Zillis. Zillis was first mentioned in the first half of the 9th Century as ''Ciranes''. Reischen was first mentioned in 1219 as ''de Rexeno''. The municipality site was certainly inhabited even earlier, as a Roman settlement and graves from the 6th or 7th century indicate. A treasure trove of 10th Century coins that were found near the village indicate that there was trade over the Viamala pass by this time. The first church in Zillis dates from about the 5th Century. The three-apse church is from the 8th Century, and around 840 the parish church of St. Martin was first mentioned. In 940 King Otto I gave the Zillis Church to the Bishop of Chur. Sutsilvan Dialects (Romansh)
Sutsilvan (Rumantsch Grischun: ''sutsilvan''; Vallader: ''suotsilvan''; Putèr: ''suotsilvaun''; derived from ''sut'' "below" and ''selva'' "forest") is a dialect of the Romansh language spoken in Domleschg, Heinzenberg, Schams, and Val Ferrera, Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. Since 1601 it has a written form: a cathecismus for school use. There is an individual dictionary for this dialect. Val Ferrera
The Ferrera Valley (, ) is a valley in the Swiss canton of Graubünden between Schams and Avers. It is 10 km long and is drained by the Avers Rhine. The only villages in the valley are Innerferrera and Ausserferrera. Administratively, the municipality of Ferrera coincides with the valley. In the Early Modern period, the Ferrera Valley was known for its iron ore. The mining industry provided its inhabitants with a livelihood. The ''Schmelzra'' mine at the entrance of the valley, is now an industrial heritage site and has since 1972 been in the care of the cultural heritage management of the Canton of Graubünden. Until the 20th century, a linguistic border separated the valley from Avers: in the Avers valley, people spoke a Walser German dialect, in the Ferrera Valley, people spoke Romansh.
