Sayantani DasGupta (Bengali language, Bengali: সায়ন্তনী দাশগুপ্ত, born 1970) is an American physician and author of Indian (Bengali people, Bengali) heritage. Early life and education DasGupta grew up in Ohio and New Jersey and completed her undergraduate studies at Brown University. She obtained her M.D and MPH degrees from Johns Hopkins University. Academia Originally trained in pediatrics and public health, Sayantani now teaches in the Master's Program in Narrative medicine at Columbia University and the Graduate Program in Health Advocacy at Sarah Lawrence College. Shamita Das Dasgupta ( Bengali: শমীতা দাশ দাশগুপ্ত; born 1949) is an Asian Indian scholar and activist. A social activist since early 1970s, she co-founded Manavi in 1985. It is the first organization of its kind that focuses on violence against South Asian women in the United States. A part-time teacher and full-time community worker, she has written extensively in the areas of ethnicity, gender, immigration, and violence against women.
