The ''Sapsan'' ( ), also known as Velaro RUS EVS, is a Russian gauge high speed electric express train. The train is a Siemens Velaro model, which in turn is based on the ICE 3M/F high-speed trains manufactured by Siemens Mobility for Russian Railways (RZD). The trains started regular service on the Saint Petersburg–Moscow Railway in December 2009, at a maximum speed of and journey time of four hours between Moscow and Saint Petersburg. On 22 March 2022, following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Siemens suspended its contract to supply additional trainsets, as well as announcing it would end maintenance and other services from 13 May 2022, with Russian Railways stepping in to continue their maintenance. High-speed Rail In Russia
High-speed rail is emerging in Russia as an increasingly popular means of transport, where it is twice as fast as the regular express trains between Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Service development Since June 1963 the Moscow-Leningrad line (ca. 650 kilometers) was serviced by a day train (Avrora) that offered a 5 hr 27 min ride with speed peaking at 160 km/h; faster speeds were not possible with heavy steel carriages and existing bogies. Development of the higher speed passenger railway service in the Soviet Russia started in 1965. First, the track and safety infrastructure was upgraded, then in 1972-1975 new aluminum cars with pneumatic suspension bogies, RT-200 (Russkaya Troyka) were designed by TVZ in Kalinin, Russia. The Saint Petersburg to Moscow railway (1855–1923 – ''Nikolaevskaya railway'') runs for through four oblasts: Leningrad Oblast, Leningrad, Novgorod Oblast, Novgorod, Tver Oblast, Tver and Moscow Oblast, Moscow. Siemens Velaro
Siemens Velaro is a family of high-speed electric multiple unit trains built by Siemens. It is based on the ICE 3 high-speed trains initially co-manufactured by Siemens and Bombardier Transportation, Bombardier for German national rail operator Deutsche Bahn (DB). In 1994, Deutsche Bahn were the first to order 50 units of the high-speed trains, branded as ''ICE 3'', that would eventually evolve into the Velaro family. This initial batch of ICE-3 trainsets was built by a consortium with Bombardier Transportation, Bombardier (acquired by Alstom), and first delivered for service in 1999. A version based on this train without Bombardier patents was developed by Siemens and has been marketed as ''Velaro'' since. Sokol (train)
Sokol (Сокол, Russian language, Russian for "falcon") was a planned high-speed rail, high-speed train in Russia. It was to be a successor of the ER200 for use on the Moscow – Saint Petersburg Railway, Moscow–St. Petersburg mainline, and was designed to operate at a cruising speed of 250 km/h. A prototype was built in 2000 and tested by Russian High Speed Railway Shareholding Co. The Sokol project was cancelled in 2002. Instead of a Sokol-based design, high speed trainsets (named ''Sapsan'') based on the Siemens Velaro were procured from Siemens in Germany. KLUB is the name of the modern Russian train control systems. The abbreviation "КЛУБ" stands for , ''Integrated Train Protection System''. Variants The most common variant is KLUB-U where the U stands for ''unified'' (). KLUB-U in-cab signalling systems are able to decode the track-side ALSN codes (''Continuous Automatic Train Signallisation'') which is similar to RS4 Codici (comparable to Pulse Code Cab Signaling in the US). In the newer ABTC-M block control the KLUB-U systems decode signals by TETRA digital radio including a remote initiation of a train stop. In those areas the train position is derived from a satellite navigation system (GPS or GLONASS). October Railway
Oktyabrskaya Railway or October Railway () is the subsidiary of RZD, servicing railway lines in the north-west of Russia. It stretches from Moscow's Leningrad Terminal in the south to Murmansk beyond the Arctic Circle in the north. The total length of the lines is over 10,000 km. The headquarters are located in Saint Petersburg. The first railway in Russia connecting Saint Petersburg to Tsarskoye Selo, 27.9 km long, commissioned in 1837, is a part of the Oktyabrskaya Railway.
