Santiago Rafael Armada Suárez
Santiago Rafael Armada Suárez or Santiago Armada (20 June 1937, Palma Soriano – 29 May 1995, Havana) was a Cuban artist and designer. He was also known by the nickname Chago. Biography Armada entered the Havana Professional School of Business in 1954 where he studied bookkeeping. In May 1958 he created the cartoon character Julito 26, which later appeared in the El Cubano Libre newspaper. During the revolutionary insurrection he stood in the Sierra Maestra, while very young, and formed part of the José Martí Column 1. Armada composed several songs that were aired on the then newly opened Radio Rebelde station. In 1961 he co-founded the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (known by its acronym UNEAC) and in 1962 became a member of the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC). He is considered, together with Servando Cabrera Moreno, Raul Martinez, Antonia Eiriz and Humberto Peña, as a participant in the visual artistic avant garde of the 60's decade. Palma Soriano
Palma Soriano is a Cuban city and municipality in the Santiago de Cuba Province. With a population of 119,740 in the city proper, it is the second-largest in the province and List of cities in Cuba, the 16th-largest in Cuba. History The city was founded in 1825, uniting ranches (''haciendas'') that stood in this area, and was the place where the body of José Martí (the leader of the Cuban independence movement, killed in 1895, in the Battle of Dos Ríos) was brought before it was laid in its final resting place in Santiago de Cuba. ''Liberation'' was a 20th-century pacifist journal published 1956 through 1977 in the United States. A bimonthly and later a monthly, the magazine identified in the 1960s with the New Left. History ''Liberation'' was founded, published, and edited by David Dellinger, Bayard Rustin, Sidney Lens, Roy Finch, and A. J. Muste out of New York City and Glen Gardner, New Jersey. Muste brought funding from the War Resisters League. For Rustin, the magazine was a major commitment of time and energy, raising money and meeting every week with Muste. He wrote to Martin Luther King Jr., who later wrote for the magazine. The June 1963 issue contained the full publication of King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail", the first version with that title. Granma (newspaper)
''Granma'' is the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba. It was formed in 1965 by the merger of two previous papers, (from Spanish: "Revolution") and ("Today"). Publication of the newspaper began in February 1966. Its name comes from the yacht '' Granma'' that carried Fidel Castro and 81 other rebels to Cuba's shores in 1956, launching the Cuban Revolution. The newspaper has been a way for the Cuban Communist Party to communicate their ideology to the world, especially regarding the United States. Marta Rojas worked for the paper since its founding.
