Santa Chiara, Antrodoco
Santa Chiara is a baroque-style, Roman Catholic church located between corso Roma and Via Savelli, in the town of Antrodoco, province of Rieti, region of Lazio, central Italy. The church was once part of a Clarissan cloistered monastery, which included a hospital. History The adjacent hostel, dedicated to St Antony or St John, was built to service the often ill pilgrims en route on the Via Salaria to Rome, dates to the 14th century; but the clarissan monastery was not founded until 1607. The hostal closed in 1906. It is not clear when the monastery was closed. The church was reconsecrated in 2012. The exterior is plain, and the entrance portal is through side doors, with only high windows providing light. Over the last centuries, the restorations removed earlier frescoes, but the altars and nave have Baroque style. Baroque Architecture
Baroque architecture is a highly decorative and theatrical style which appeared in Italy in the early 17th century and gradually spread across Europe. It was originally introduced by the Catholic Church, particularly by the Jesuits, as a means to combat the Reformation and the Protestant church with a new architecture that inspired surprise and awe. It reached its peak in the High Baroque (1625–1675), when it was used in churches and palaces in Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Bavaria and Austria. In the Late Baroque period (1675–1750), it reached as far as Russia and the Spanish and Portuguese colonies in Latin America. Antrodoco
Antrodoco ( Sabino: ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Rieti, in the Lazio region of central Italy. The name derives from the Latin Interocrea (between the mountains). Geography Antrodoco is located along the Velino river, in the confluence point of two apennine valleys: the Velino valley, at North, and the Rio creek valley (a tributary of Velino) at East. Both are highly suggestive valleys, so narrow that they form canyons with sheer rock over the river: the first canyon is known as ''Gole del Velino'', the latter as ''Gole di Antrodoco''. Monte Giano, the mountain where ''Gole di Antrodoco'' is located, is known for a pine tree forest with the shape of the word "DVX" (Latin for duce) which was planted in 1939 and is visible from miles of distance. The Province of Rieti ( it, Provincia di Rieti) is a province in the Lazio region of Italy. Its capital is the city of Rieti. Established in 1927, it has an area of with a total population of 157,887 people as of 2017. There are 73 '' comuni'' in the province. Poor Clares
The Poor Clares, officially the Order of Saint Clare ( la, Ordo sanctae Clarae) – originally referred to as the Order of Poor Ladies, and later the Clarisses, the Minoresses, the Franciscan Clarist Order, and the Second Order of Saint Francis – are members of a contemplative Order of nuns in the Catholic Church. The Poor Clares were the second Franciscan branch of the order to be established. Founded by Clare of Assisi and Francis of Assisi on Palm Sunday in the year 1212, they were organized after the Order of Friars Minor (the ''first Order''), and before the Third Order of Saint Francis for the laity. Via Salaria
The Via Salaria was an ancient Roman road in Italy. It eventually ran from Rome (from Porta Salaria of the Aurelian Walls) to ''Castrum Truentinum'' ( Porto d'Ascoli) on the Adriatic coast, a distance of 242 km. The road also passed through Reate (Rieti) and Asculum ( Ascoli Piceno). Strada statale 4 Via Salaria (SS4) is the modern state highway that maintains the old road's name and runs on the same path from Rome to the Adriatic sea. History The Via Salaria owes its name to the Latin word for "salt", since it was the route by which the Sabines living nearer the Tyrrhenian sea came to fetch salt from the marshes at the mouth of the river Tiber, the Campus Salinarum (near Portus).
