Santa Barbara is a heritage-listed villa at 209 Moray Street, New Farm, Queensland, New Farm, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Eric Percival Trewern and built from 1929 to 1930 by DF Roberts. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 28 January 2000. History Santa Barbara, a rendered brick residence in the Spanish Mission style was erected in 1929-30 for Brisbane businesswoman Mrs Sarah Balls. The house was designed by Brisbane architect EP Trewern, and was constructed by builder DF Roberts. The site was part of a much larger parcel of land – part of the New Farm of convict days – surveyed in 1843 as Eastern Suburban Allotment 19 [nearly 22 acres] and purchased in 1844 by John McConnel of Brisbane and Cressbrook. Arcade (architecture)
An arcade is a succession of contiguous arches, with each arch supported by a colonnade of columns or Pier (architecture), piers. Exterior arcades are designed to provide a sheltered walkway for pedestrians; they include many loggias, but here arches are not an essential element. Wunderlich were a brand of decorative metal panels used for pressed metal ceilings and other architectural elements in Australia. History The Wunderlich company was established by Ernest Julius Wunderlich in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia in 1885. Initially the panels were imported from Berlin, Germany but later patents were taken out and the panels were manufactured in Australia. The panels were produced until the 1950s when popular tastes changed away from these traditional elements. The Surfers Paradise Hotel was the historic hotel that led to the development of Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Surfers Paradise in Queensland, Australia. History During the 1920s, the Australian hotelier Jim Cavill (born James Freeman Cavill) purchased 10 acres of land in Elston (now Surfers Paradise). The land has previously been developed by previous owners but 1925 marked the openings of the Jubilee Bridge, Southport, Jubilee Bridge and the South Coast Road, opening up the area to a new flow of driving tourists. That year (or in 1928), Jim Cavill opened the Surfers Paradise Hotel, a 16-bedroom hotel located on the intersection of the South Coast Road and the old coach track.
